Avast! has released a major update for its anti-virus tool and internet security suite, delivering a host of improvements to most of the program’s major components, including its Behaviour Shield and anti-rootkit engine.
Avast! 5.1 builds on the previous version 5 release, which appeared last year. Version 5 introduced a new user interface, full compatibility with Windows 7, improved performance (particularly with multi-core processors) and a new gaming mode, which detects full-screen applications and disables popups and other on-screen notifications without compromising security. Other improvements included a new heuristics engine, code emulator, behaviour shield and intelligent scanner.
The latest release – version 5.1.864 – sees the Behaviour Shield tweaked to deliver “big improvements”, while other non-defined improvements have been made to the anti-rootkit engine, cleaning module and Web Shield. There have also been “minor” improvements made to the user interface and firewall, while support has been added for sound packs. The update will be delivered automatically to existing Avast! users, who will be required to reboot when it's complete.
Some users have reported poor performance on 64-bit PCs after the update has been applied automatically in the program itself – uninstalling then reinstalling the new version should resolve this problem.
Avast! 5.1 Free, Avast! 5.1 Pro and Avast! Internet Security 5.1 are available now for Windows 2000, XP, Vista and 7 users.
