Convertilla: a basic, but quick and easy video converter

Finding videos online is easy. Finding videos in a format you can play is sometimes more difficult, though, which is why you might need a tool like Convertilla to convert movies from one file type to another. The program's big advantage is its simplicity. There's no talk of codecs or bit rates here; conversion can be as easy as dragging and dropping your file onto Convertilla, choosing the output format and clicking Convert. But it's not totally feature-free. The program can import several file types, for instance: MP4, FLV, MKV, MPG, AVI, WMV and MOV. Convertilla keeps its options to a minimum, making the program super-easy to use You can export them in any of those formats, as well as 3GP or MP3 (if you only need the soundtrack), with some control over the final resolution and video quality. Convertilla also provides profiles for many common devices: Android, iPod, Blackberry, Sony PSP and PS3, Microsoft XBOX 360 and Zune, Nokia N-series and others. If you want a clip to play on one of these then just choose the appropriate profile and Convertilla will select an appropriate output format and resolution for you. And like many similar programs, Convertilla is essentially a shell for the excellent FFmpeg tool, so you can be sure that your conversions will be done properly and at speed. There are plenty of limitations here, of course. You can only choose one video to convert at a time; you're not able to select audio or video codecs, specify custom bit rates, and more. If it's sheer video conversion power you need then something like Freemake Video Converter will be a far better option. But if you don't need any of that, and are just looking for a transcoding tool which is quick, simple and easy to use, then Convertilla could still be an excellent choice.

Eliminate unwanted IE, Firefox and Chrome addons with Toolbar Cleaner

From full commercial applications to simple freeware tools, it's surprising just how many setup programs will now try to install unwanted browser addons on your PC. And too many of these can slow your system down, make it less stable, maybe even compromise your privacy. The deceptive techniques used by some software means these "extras" can be difficult to avoid, too. But fortunately help is at hand in the shape of the free Toolbar Cleaner, which can assist you in reviewing and taking control of your IE, Firefox and Chrome addons. There is a certain irony to overcome first, though, because can you guess what the Toolbar Cleaner wants to do during installation? Yes: install a system addon and change your browser home page… The program doesn't try to conceal this, though, so if you pay attention on the final page, and clear the relevant checkboxes before clicking "Finish", all will be well. After that, launching Toolbar Cleaner reveals a simple dialog box which lists your IE toolbars and BHOs, as well as your extensions and plugins for Firefox and Chrome. Toolbar Cleaner displays all your IE, Firefox and Chrome addons in a single dialog Right-clicking a particular entry and selecting "Properties" will tell you more about it. So, for instance, we discovered that the "Office Document Cache Handler" BHO on our system related to a URLREDIR.DLL file in our Office 2010 installation. And if you decide you don't need one or more extensions, then getting rid of them is as simple as selecting a checkbox next to each one, and clicking the "Remove" button. There is a significant limitation here, in that Toolbar Cleaner is only removing the reference to the extension in your browser, not uninstalling the extension files themselves. So if you remove an IE toolbar, for instance, then it won't be visible when you next restart the browser, but the core DLLs (or whatever) will still be on your system. And in fact the program acknowledges this by offering to launch Control Panel, so you can manually uninstall the associated application yourself. Which is a smart move, but also makes clear that you could just as easily remove most unwanted browser addons without needing to install Toolbar Cleaner at all. Still, Toolbar Cleaner is a likeable tool, very compact (it uses under 1MB of hard drive space), and could be useful just as a quick way to review all your browser addons, even if you don't ever bother with the removal functionality. And if you can forgive the authors bundling an unwanted addon with the program, we'd recommend you give it a try.

MacPaw launches CleanMyPC for Windows computers

Kiev-based developer MacPaw, best known for its CleanMyMac tool for Mac computers, has ventured onto the Windows platform for the first time with an equivalent cleaning application for the PC, the appropriately titled CleanMyPC. As the name implies, CleanMyPC includes a suite of cleaning tools for Windows computers. The main cleaning component promises to remove gigabytes of files from your PC, and is backed up by five further maintenance tools: Secure Erase, Complete Uninstall, Registry Maintenance, Autorun and Gadgets & Extensions Manager. CleanMyPC opens with a slick, glossy user interface. It’s not all about looks, though, as the program bends over backwards to explain what’s going on and make things as easy as possible for the end user. Taking the main cleanup tool as an example, once you’ve scanned your computer you can review exactly what the program intends to remove. At this point we should point out that the bulk of the savings CleanMyPC promises to make involve removing System Restore points and deleting the Hibernation file, and while genuine savings of hundres of megabytes are still possible, the fact System Restore points are selected for deletion by default highlights the importance of manually reviewing what the program intends to delete, particularly considering the absence of any backup options or confirmation dialogs. The other tools are largely self-explanatory – if a little limited in places – and equally easy to navigate and use. The Gadgets & Extensions Manager is worth highlighting because it allows the user to easily review and remove unwanted browser extensions as well as little used Windows components. CleanMyPC is available for free download as a function-limited demo – many components won’t function beyond offering a preview, while the main cleanup tool is limited to removing a maximum of 500MB of data before registration is required. An unlimited license – which includes all future updates – costs $29.95, although there is a special launch day offer available. The program requires a PC running Windows XP, Vista or 7.

RealPlayer exits beta, now available for Android

Remember RealPlayer? The media player that was once – quite some time ago – one of the go-to media players for online media disappeared into relative obscurity, shouldered out of the limelight by the likes of Silverlight and HTML5 video. For desktop platforms, RealPlayer has all but vanished, but it is trying to make headway into the mobile market. RealPlayer has been available for Android as a beta for a little while, but now the app has been officially released. Rather than just audio and video, RealPlayer for Android can also be used to play slideshows of photos, but movies and music are really where it’s all at. There is support for playlists so you can create mood music for every occasion and access them with ease. Aside from RealVideo and RealAudio – support for which can be added through and in-app purchase – the app can playback any file that is supported by your phone or tablet. RealPlayer for Android The interface is neatly set out and a handy widget is available so you can control media playback from the home screen – you can also control playback when your device is locked. RealNetworks’ online focus means that a variety of sharing options should come as no surprise; in addition to sharing through your favorite social network, there is also support for lastFM scrobbling so you can let others know what you are listening to. The app does suffer a little from trying to be a jack of all trades – it does a reasonably good job of acting as a music player, a video player and a photo viewer, but it does not excel in any of these areas and there are better apps available for each of these tasks. That said, if you are someone who abandoned RealPlayer some time ago, this might be the time to give the name a second chance as this mobile app is a different beast to the desktop tool of days gone by. You can find out more and download a free copy of the app by paying a visit to the RealPlayer for Android review page.

Emisoft's free BlitzBlank deletes even the most stubborn malware files

Malware removal is normally an entirely automatic process. Your PC encounters something unpleasant, your antivirus package deletes it, and you carry on as before: easy. Sometimes, though, life isn't quite as straightforward. In particular, if you've spotted a suspect process which your security suite doesn't recognise yet, then you'll probably want to remove it manually. And that can be a real challenge. You might try to delete the executable, for instance, but find Windows won't allow it as the file is locked. Or even if you can remove a malware file, or any related Registry keys, another component of the virus may replace them. Which is just a little frustrating, but fortunately help is at hand in the shape of Emsisoft's portable BlitzBlank. This interesting tool allows you to specify files, folders, drivers, Registry keys and values, and decide what you'd like to do with them (delete, move, copy, and more). But the key difference is that, when you click Execute Now, the program reboots your system (after a warning, of course). It then processes your commands before Windows loads, and (hopefully) before the malware is running, which greatly improves your chance of success. BlitzBlank has some interesting twists, too, such as the ability to replace a target file with a dummy (something of the same size and name but without containing any executable code). This could prevent other malware components from realising you've disabled a part of their code, and replacing the missing file. Of course you do need to use the program with extreme caution. If you delete some critical system file, driver or Registry key, or even if you remove just part of some deeply embedded malware, then you may find your PC won't boot again (not even in Safe Mode). Don't even think of trying BlitzBlank unless you're properly equipped to cope with that kind of situation, preferably with a complete system backup to hand. If you know what you're doing, though, BlitzBlank is a useful tool which makes it relatively easy to dispatch stubborn files and Registry keys. It's also reasonably small (1.09 MB) and portable, making it a worthwhile addition to most people's security toolkit.

Review: CyberLink Power2Go 8 Platinum

Try out one or two of the leading disc burning suites and you'll quickly realise that they can be, well, just a little on the bulky side. Tough competition has resulted in ever-extending feature lists, and so alongside the regular burning functions you'll get media managers, video editors, mobile device support and more. If you'll use all those features, then of course that's great. But if you find the top suites too bloated, then you might like to try CyberLink's Power2Go 8 Platinum, which focuses its attention on the core disc burning functionality which you might actually want to use. The program allows you to burn encrypted and password-protect discs, for instance; you can share images via interactive photo galleries; it's easy to mount and view disc images as virtual drives; and this new version also adds system recovery features, enhanced image format and codec support, improved audio editing, and more. Power2Go 8 does have one notable limitation, in that it can't burn Blu-ray video discs (you get DVD and Video CD authoring only). Otherwise, though, it looks like a capable disc burning suite - and we were very interested to put it to the test. Interface Launch Power2Go 8 and the program presents you with a straightforward front-end menu. This organises its core functions into 7 categories, like "Data Disc", "Music Disc", "Video Disc" and so on, and just moving your mouse over a category icon will reveal the options you have available. Choose one of these and you're presented with a very familiar interface; Explorer-type panes in the top of the window, working area in the other, so all you have to do is browse to your files and drag and drop them onto the disc. If you've ever used another disc burning package then you'll feel at home right away. And if you'd prefer not to use the full interface at all, simply drag and drop your files onto the program's desktop gadget and Power2Go will handle the rest. One issue we do have with the Power2Go interface is the lack of context-sensitive help. If you don't understand something within a dialog, pressing F1 does nothing; instead you'll have to click Cancel, access Help from the main program window, and search for whatever you need. And, annoyingly, a few dialogs have CyberLink ads and Upgrade buttons. That's fine for a freeware tool, but definitely not for a commercial package. Otherwise, though, Power2Go 8′s interface is clean and easy to use. But what about its functionality? Data, photo, audio burning Power2Go 8′s core data burning features are straightforward, and it's easy to create standard data discs. Burning performance is comparable with other suites, too; a test data DVD required 4:43 to burn in Roxio Creator 2012, 4:28 here. What's more interesting is the suite's ability to encrypt your data, though. Choose to protect some or all your target files with 128 or 256-bit encryption, enter a password, and (optionally) a password reminder, and the program will burn a secure disc for you. This still includes the files, but they're encrypted and renamed; only when you run the decrypting tool on the disc, and enter the password, will you be able to view or extract them. There are some minor problems with this scheme. There's no warning about the suitability of the password, for instance; you could enter a single character the Power2Go 8 won't complain. But as long as you're sensible, this is a welcome tool which makes it much easier to share confidential data via disc. The ability to create photo slideshow is another handy feature. In a click or two you can give your slideshow a title, decide how long your slides will be displayed, add a background image, soundtrack, a clickable link, even choose to display the EXIF information over the image. You don't get any transitions, but the end results do look good, and the galleries are a worthwhile inclusion in the suite. Power2Go's audio burning features are, by comparison, relatively ordinary. You're able to burn MP3 and WMA CDs or DVDs, as well as regular audio CDs, but the import format support is limited (audio CD, MP3, WMA, WAV, M4A) - no FLAC or OGG files accepted here. By way of compensation, though, the program does allow you to tweak your audio files with the bundled WaveEditor. In a click or two this can trim unwanted audio, adjust volume, change speed or pitch, apply a few effects, mix tracks together and more. There are free tools around which can do much the same, but it's still useful to have this kind of power so easily available. Video authoring Power2Go's video authoring capabilities see the program able to create video CDs, DVD videos and DVD folders. It can import a lengthy list of video formats, and is improved in this version with new support for H.264 and AAC (although it still can't open FLV files, unfortunately). Drag in your clips and they'll be added to the default animated menu, you can preview this with a click, then burn it if you're happy. If you're not happy with the standard menu templates, then Power2Go can access more than 5,000 online via CyberLink's DirectorZone site. There are some good examples, but finding the ones you need can be difficult. Menu customisation options are limited, too. You can edit and tweak the text (set your preferred font, style and alignment), and move buttons around, but there's nothing to compete with the design features you get with Nero Vision/ Video, say. And your control over the finished disc is limited to the basics. You get to choose the aspect ratio (4:3 or 16:9), quality settings, audio encoding and TV format (NTSC or PAL), but there are no options to normalise audio, manually set resolutions or bitrates. If you're used to authoring DVDs with a more powerful tool then this is all going to feel rather limited. Encoding speeds are good (16x test MOVs took 25 minutes to convert to a video DVD in Roxio MyDVD, 12:13 here), though, and if your video needs are fairly simple then Power2Go 8 is probably going to be good enough. Recovery and more One of the headline additions to Power2Go 8 is a "System Recovery" option. This essentially acts as a simple image backup tool, saving the entire contents of your system partition to a succession of discs, and making the first bootable so it's easy to restore the image if disaster strikes. This is simple to use, and plainly better than not having any backups at all. But it takes a long time, has no configuration options at all (you can't exclude particular files, for instance), and is really only practical if you have a Blu-ray drive (our 132GB of data would require no less than 25 DVDs, the program guesstimated). A real backup tool - even just Windows' own - will be preferable for just about everyone. Power2Go's image handling features are rather more useful, with the program able to build images from a selection of files, copy a disc to an image file, or burn an image file to CD, DVD or Blu-ray. And new this time, you can even mount an image as a virtual drive, so you can view its contents or extract required files and folders without burning it to disc. The list of supported formats is a little short - ISO, CyberLink's own P2I and RDF, and that's it - but that's probably enough to get by. And there are several smaller but still worthwhile features dotted around the Power2Go menus. Like the Audio Converter, which accepts videos in the all the main formats, and can extract their soundtrack to a WAV, WMA or MP3 file. Power2Go 8 isn't the most comprehensive of disc burning suites, then. But then the program is really more about focusing on the features that really matter, and here it generally does a good job, providing everything most people will need at a significantly lower price than the leading suites. Just keep in mind that Power2Go 8 comes in two main flavours. Platinum ($54.95) includes everything we've described here; but Power2Go 8 Deluxe ($44.95) essentially just drops System Recovery and the ability to use Dolby Audio on DVD videos. If you can live with that, then it would be our preferred choice.

Enigma Virtual Box compacts all an application's files into a single executable

The typical large application will have a rather complex structure. There might be DLLs, OCXs and other executable components, data files and more, all scattered across a potentially very large number of subfolders: not necessarily very convenient. But it doesn't have to be that way. Point Enigma Virtual Box at an application and it's able to combine all the program's components and data files into a single module. This is compressed, so can greatly reduce the disk space required for a program. And if you're a software developer, then the process does a very good job of protecting your components from misuse. (The files are unpacked in RAM, never written to disc, so it becomes much more difficult for others to take your DLLs, OCXs, images, audio files and any other elements of your application.) This is a surprisingly easy process to set up, too. As a test, we pointed Enigma Virtual Box at an ancient copy of Paint Shop Pro (the executable does some odd things so we knew that if this worked, anything should). Really all this involved was pointing the program at the Paint Shop Pro executable file, providing a folder where the combined executable would be stored, and that was it: Enigma Virtual Box took care of everything else itself. A simple, point-and-click interface ensures the program is very easy to use When it was done, we launched the new "Paint Shop Pro_boxed.exe" executable (a chunky 330MB in size, rather than the 5.6MB of the original build). And it ran and worked just fine, no problems at all. Initialisation was a fraction slower than usual, understandable as the executable had to unpack its compressed components, but this wasn't slow enough to be a particular concern. And in the main the program just worked as it always did, without any real issues. Other packages were compressed just as effectively. And if you need to get more advanced then the program does have more abilities you can call on. In particular, it's even able to set up Registry virtualisation, which in principle means you're able to make a regular application portable by having it write only to its own local Registry copy. Enigma Virtual Box is aimed at developers, then, and it's easy to see why: this is a very easy way to prevent others from being able to grab or hack the components of any given application. But the ability to turn complex applications into portable, single executables could be useful in many situations, and in reality the program could come in handy for any experienced PC user.

FolderChangesView tracks files being created/ modified/ deleted in real time

Your hard drive is buzzing, and you don't know why. Finding out what's going on is probably a good idea: at best a legitimate program is tying up resources and slowing you down, at worst you've got a malware infection. But what do you do now? Launching FolderChangesView, the latest release from NirSoft, could be a good first move. The program monitors file changes on your hard drive, and opens by asking exactly which base folder you'd like it to watch. By default this is C:\, but can be set to whatever you like. And you also have the option to view changes only in that folder, or all its subfolders as well. For your first run, though, just click OK to accept the default settings, then do something which will create file system activity: launch Firefox, say. And immediately you'll see the FolderChangesView window begin to detail what's happening, listing the path and name of any files; whether they've been created, modified or deleted; and the date and time of each event. The program lists all new and modified files on your hard drive If you have been experiencing any odd hard drive activity then this report, in particular the file and folder names, should give more clues as to the cause (Firefox-related action usually takes place in or below the \Users\[UserName]|AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox folder, for instance). And simply leaving FolderChangesView running for a while can tell you a lot about what's happening on your system. If you find a non-critical program is more active than you thought then maybe it's worth considering removing or restricting it in some way, so reducing background activity and improving your PC's performance. Of course Sysinternals Process Monitor (a far more sophisticated tool) will do all the same things, and a lot more, including telling you which process is responsible for each action. FolderChangesView is simpler and easier to use, though, so if you'd just like to find out more about drive activity right now - no need to mess around with filters or anything else - then the program makes a better first choice. Although as the entire set of FolderChangesView files consume only around 92KB on our test PC, it's not really as though you have to pick one or the other. We say: you need them both.

System Mechanic 11.5 extends Windows 8 support, drops "per pc" licensing restrictions

Iolo technologies has released System Mechanic 11.5, the latest edition of its flagship PC maintenance and optimisation suite. And the company is pointing to the new Guided Recommendations as the highlight of this build, claiming they "harness the collective intelligence of the entire System Mechanic community base", in particular when helping to figure out exactly which startup tools you need to run, and which you can safely do without. (Which sounds very similar to the cloud-based approach used by some other products, actually, but we're not complaining. Anything which helps more reliably manage your startup programs is fine by us.) The latest System Mechanic does a more reliable job of identifying and clearing up performance problems Iolo also says System Mechanic 11.5 isn't just Windows 8-compatible; this version has been specifically designed to work and expand on the new operating system, and so should deliver notably better results. As usual, the latest System Mechanic release includes more Tune-up definitions, specific fixes to help detect and resolve thousands of potential PC performance and stability issues. And perhaps most interesting of all, System Mechanic 11.5 is now available under a new Whole Home License, which means there's no longer any "per PC" restriction: just buy one copy of the program, and use the same activation key to install it on each of your home systems. Surprisingly, there's no extra payment or price increase involved - no catch at all (not that we've spotted yet, anyway). The program used to be licensed per PC, now it's per home, a much simpler system which we can only hope catches on elsewhere. If you'd rather not pay anything at all, though, keep in mind that the program is already available in a limited iolo System Mechanic Free version, as well as the regular iolo System Mechanic build, and more powerful System Mechanic Professional release.

Detect wifi intruders with Wireless Network Watcher

If you'd like to keep your wireless network secure then turning on the best possible encryption is usually a very good place to start. There may still be room for problems, though (as I discovered, when my brother accidentally turned off his encryption entirely while trying to set up a TV), so it could be worth using NirSoft's Wireless Network Watcher to keep a lookout for wifi intruders. As usual with NirSoft programs, Wireless Network Watcher is compact in the extreme, a tiny download (even when unpacked it requires less than 700KB drive space) which requires no installation: just unzip it and go. And by default the program will then run a quick inventory of your network, returning various details for every device it encounters: IP address, device name, MAC address  and the device manufacturer (sometimes, anyway). Wireless Network Watcher makes it easy to see what's connected to your network at any one time Click Options > Background Scan, Options > Beep On New Device, though, and the program will run regular scans of your network, alerting you to any unexpected visitors it might find. How often? The program runs a "continuous" background scan, apparently. This sounds a little alarming, but the Help file claims that "the background scan is slower and less intensive then the regular scan, so it won't overload your computer". And as Task Manager shows no real resource use at all, we think this is probably true. If you're concerned, though, clicking Options > Advanced Options allows you to choose how often the background scan is run. And you're able to customise what happens when a new device is detected, too, with options to play a custom audio file, or execute the command of your choice. As wireless monitoring systems go, Wireless Network Watcher is, well, plainly a little on the basic side. It's also free, effective, lightweight, configurable and very easy to use, though, and if your security needs are simple then the program will probably serve you very well.

Power up your app titlebar menus with WindowMenuPlus

Sometimes Windows can be really frustrating, with lots of useful tweaks and tools buried away beneath layers of dialog boxes and hard-to-reach system tools. WindowMenuPlus 1.1 aims to place some really useful tweaks for your apps on to the menu that pops up when you either right-click its titlebar or taskbar button (Vista and XP only). Options include being able to keep the current window on top of other windows (and make it semi-transparent at the same time), team a program’s priorities, kill its parent process, get more information about it and quickly reposition or resize the window a number of custom ways. Once installed, WindowMenuPlus resides in the Taskbar’s Notification area where you can selectively show or hide the various options it offers, or you can ignore this, fire up a program and see what new functions are available by right-clicking its titlebar. “Keep on top” ensures the application window doesn’t disappear behind other program windows as they’re brought into focus, which has most use on small handy apps like the Calculator. If you find these apps distracting, and don’t want to move them out of the way to view the windows beneath, you can also set degrees of transparency to ensure the content beneath the window can be seen through it. Windows 7 introduced the Aero Snap feature, whereby dragging the window to one side of the screen or the other resized it to take up half the available screen space. WindowMenuPlus takes this even further, with a host of options underneath the Move to and Maximize to windows. Move to” allows you to pin the window to any screen edge or align it centrally, while “Maximize to” includes options for resizing windows to fit on the edges and corners, making it easy to set up dual- and four-paned windows. You can also maximise the window by its width or height only. Techies will enjoy options such as being able to kill the parent process, set the program’s priority or free up any unused memory the program has harnessed. You can also opt to open the program’s folder with a single click, view lots of useful information about the program (this can all be copied to the Windows clipboard for diagnostic purposes) and even minimize the program to the Notification area instead of the Taskbar. There are some drawbacks: any configured options are lost when the program is closed, and it won’t work with all applications, specifically those that don’t utilise the standard Windows menu bars – including Google Chrome and later versions of Microsoft Office. Despite these shortcomings – an option to remember a program’s options would be incredibly useful in a future version – WindowMenuPlus remains an interesting tool that could prove useful to anyone who struggles to manage multiple windows and applications on a single desktop. WindowsMenuPlus is a free download for personal and non-commercial use, and works on any PC running Windows XP, Vista, 7 and Server.

SugarSync for iOS 4.0 boasts elegant redesign, integrates with other apps

SugarSync, Inc has released SugarSync for iOS 4.0, a major new release for iPad and iPhone owners wishing access to their SugarSync cloud storage on the move. Version 4.0.0 features a major redesign designed to simplify syncing and sharing, plus integrates with other apps through the "Open in" feature. The update also adds support for Device Filtering, a feature recently introduced in the SugarSync 2.0.9 desktop app for Windows and Mac, along with Cloud Search, and promises future support for folder labels. The redesign in SugarSync 4.0 mirrors that found in the desktop and Android apps that were released in February. The aim is to streamline the app’s look and make it easier to navigate. In particular, the design is geared towards simplifying access to recently synced content from other devices, plus makes it easier to both share and view shared content from others thanks to new Shared by Me and Shared with Me tabs. SugarSync for iOS 4.0 shows off its new sleek, more user-friendly look. The iOS app also introduces support for the recently implemented Device Filter, which allows users to sync only specific folders to the cloud from their devices. This feature allows users to view all synced folders or restrict browsing to those shared with a specific computer or mobile. The new feature has also inspired the Cloud Search tool, which makes it possible for users to search across their entire online storage, not just those folders synced with the iPad or iPhone. From here users can then choose to sync, share or view individual files. SugarSync now fully supports the iOS “Open in” feature, which allows users to save content to their SugarSync storage from other apps such as Mail or Pages, plus open documents already stored on SugarSync’s servers in compatible apps on the iPad or iPhone. The desktop update introduced folder labels, and support for this feature is promised in a future version. SugarSync for iOS 4.0.0 is available now as a free download, as are SugarSync 2.0.9 for Windows and Mac, and SugarSync for Android 4.0.1. SugarSync offers a free 5GB storage plan, as well as paid-for plans, with prices starting from $7.49 a month ($74.99 a year) for 60GB.

Chrome 13 beta released, gains Print Preview, PDF output, prerendering speedup

It's taken a long time. A very, very long time. But, at last, the latest Chrome 13 beta sees the browser finally gain a Print Preview function. And this isn't just some half-finished beta version, either - it's really quite impressive. To see it this action, just click Print and the preview will appear in a new tab (which seems more natural than the "special" window used in some other browsers). You're able to choose your destination printer from a list, which includes Chrome's own Print to PDF option. You can select your preferred page layout (portrait or landscape), or choose colour or black and white output and the preview window updates immediately. Of course you also get all the usual settings, like the pages to print and the number of copies, and when you're happy then clicking Print will deliver the finished results. Another interesting addition this time around is support for prerendering. The idea is that when you carry out a Google search, Chrome will be able to prerender the top search result, if it's confident you'll click on this. And so if you actually do click on the link then it'll pop up more or less instantly. (See this Google blog post for more details.) Elsewhere, the Omnibox gains support for partial matching, so if you enter just part of one of the words in a page title or URL from your browsing history then it'll be presented as a suggestion (welcome news, though really that should have been there in the first place). And of course there are a host of smaller additions, bug-fixes and speedups. As usual, they're detailed in the SVN revision log, but you'll need to be really interested to wade through the list - there are more than 5,000 changes in total. Download Chrome 13 beta for Windows, Mac or Linux.
