With no exciting new features, applets, interface tweaks or anything else, Windows 7 SP1 isn't exactly the most interesting service pack Microsoft has ever released.
Still, the build does manage to squeeze in all the previously released hotfixes and security patches for Windows 7, so it remains an essential upgrade for your system.
SP1 is now available on Windows Update, and that's the most efficient way to get your copy. If your system is set up to download updates automatically then it should grab anything you need on its own; if it's not, go to Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update > Check for updates and see what's available. (You may need to install some updates, then check again before SP1 appears).
If you need to update several PCs, though, or one or more of your systems doesn't have an internet connection, then you may prefer the stand-alone version instead. This comes in the form of a 1.9GB ISO file: download a copy, burn it to a blank DVD, and running setup.exe on the resulting disc will launch the installation for you.
This isn't a complicated process. On our test PC we were told that the service pack was being prepared. After a moment or two a new dialog appeared, where we clicked Install. And there was nothing else to do but leave SP1 to do its work. 30 minutes and one reboot later the job was done.
This was just a relatively simple installation, though. If you know from previous experience that your Windows 7 setup is a little more complicated, then you may want to check SP1′s release notes and other technical documentation on the Microsoft site.
As there are no major tweaks or changes this time around, it's unlikely that SP1 should cause you any issues. If you do have problems, though, you can remove it just like any other Windows update. Click Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program > View installed updates, scroll to the Microsoft Windows section, click "Service Pack for Microsoft Windows" and click Uninstall. Follow the instructions and your PC will be stripped to its pre-SP1 state.
Download the Windows 7 SP1 installation disc (1.9GB, both 32/64-bit editions).
