Quickly highlight suspect startup programs with Autorun Angel

When you think your PC has been infected by malware or spyware, then checking your Windows startup programs may seem like a good place to start looking for the source. But there's a problem. Many of these will be cryptically-named executables which you won't recognise at all, so how are you supposed to decide which ones are safe, and which require further research? You could spend an age checking out each program manually, but life will probably be easier if you get a little help from Autorun Angel, which quickly compares your startup list against "known safe" applications and highlights whatever might be left. On our test PC, for instance, Autorun Angel first displayed no less than 278 files of interest: startup programs, drivers, some processes running in memory, and more. Not really a list we'd want to have to trim down ourselves. Autorun Angel's whitelist can help you spot suspect Windows startup programs Just click the "Scan" button, though, and the program will connect with its cloud-based whitelist of applications, stripping out all the safe files until only those unrecognised are left. And this had a dramatic effect for us, cutting the original list of 278 files down to only 8 - a much more manageable research task. Of course the problem with whitelisting is that, well, there are a lot of legitimate files out there to whitelist. And so there will always be plenty of entirely safe items which Autorun Angel didn't recognise. On our system, for instance, it left a VMware Workstation component and our Cloudmark spam filter on the final list. (Although you can submit similar files on your system for inclusion in the database at some later date.) And Autorun Angel doesn't include any active file removal component, either, so if you do find something nasty then you'll need to figure out for yourself how to get rid of it. The program is simple, free, and potentially very useful when you're first investigating a PC for a possible infection, though, and on balance we think it merits a place in your security toolkit.

Audacity 2.0.3 released, promises better quality and faster resampling

Popular open-source, cross-platform sound recording, editing and mixing tool Audacity 2.0.3 has been released. Despite the minor revision number, the new update boasts several key new features, including a new resampling library, tweaked Time Tracks tool and several new effects. Audacity 2.0.3 also includes a number of key bug fixes, but does ship with a number of other issues as yet unresolved, all of which are documented in the release notes. Audacity 2.0.3 debuts a brand new resampling library, the SoX Resampler library (libsoxr), which replaces the existing libresample library. Audacity’s release notes claim this new library offers greater resampling speed and higher quality. Audacity 2.0.3 debuts a number of significant changes, including three new effect filters. The Time Track feature, which allows users to change the playback rate over a specified time, has been tweaked with several improvements. The “Set Range” option now only changes the range of the Time Track itself, preserving existing warp points’ pitch/speed. A vertical scale with linear and logarithmic display and interpolations has been introduced. Other changes to Time Track allow the tool to emember upper and lower speed limits when saving and reopening projects, including Warp points in projects saved in previous versions of Audacity. The tool also benefit from two notable bug fixes resolving problems with Loop Play and inaccurate playback and rendering. Version 2.0.3 also adds three new effects: Studio Fade Out, Adjustable Fade and Bass and Treble, the latter replacing the old Bass Boost tool. It also now supports real sample rates up to 384,000Hz, rebadges the Labeled Regions option under the Edit menu as Labeled Audio (with additional features including support for split placement at point labels. Notable bug fixes include resolutions for crashes caused when using Undo when time-shifting tracks or Repair on selections extending into empty track space. The Export Multiple now refuses to export files if no audio (or all audio is muted) is present in the file. Toolbar buttons are also now selectable using the [Enter] key. Despite these fixes, a number of bugs and issues remain, detailed in full in the Audacity 2.0.3 release notes. Audacity 2.0.3 is available now as a free, cross-platform download for Windows, Mac and Linux. A portable build of Audacity 2.0.2 is also available – this should be updated to the latest release shortly.

Directory Monitor: watch files being created, modified or deleted in real time

Whether you're concerned about security, system performance, or just wondering exactly why your PC's hard drive has been constantly active for the last half hour, being able to see exactly which files are being created, modified or deleted right now can be very useful. And that's why last month we told you about FolderChangesView, an excellent new NirSoft tool which made it easy to track just that type of file system activity. The program was a little short on configuration options, though. That's hardly a great surprise - at a tiny 65KB we're lucky it does anything at all - but if you need a little more folder-watching power then you may like to try the free Directory Monitor, instead. The core functionality here is similar to the Nirsoft tool: click Add, point the program to the folder you'd like to monitor, then watch as the Log pane displays new, modified, renamed or deleted files. You get more control over exactly what you see, though. Are you only interested in new and deleted files, for instance? When adding a folder, check only "New Files" and "Deletions" and that's all the program will display. Add one or more folders, and Directory Monitor will list files as they're created, modified or deleted there There are several extra logging options. You can have Directory Monitor display balloon notifications as files are created or deleted, for instance. It'll display events in the Log pane. You can export this as an XML file, or have the log automatically backed up to a file, and more. Clicking File > Options revealed plenty of other useful settings. You can have the program launch at boot time, for instance; set its window to be "always on top" for easier monitoring; choose to create a separate log file for each directory you're monitoring, and more. And, perhaps most powerfully, it's even possible to inform a program of any of these events, and pass the key details as command line parameters. So you could have Directory Monitor detect new files as they appeared in a particular folder, for instance, then have them immediately passed to an archiving or backup tool for instant protection. There are also down sides to Folder Monitor. You don't seem able to track changes across your system drive by specifying just the root folder, for instance. We pointed Directory Monitor at C:\ and it detected nothing at all. There are a few interface issues, too. In particular, the program needs a "Stop logging" button, so that you can easily regain control if the log window is scrolling endlessly and you're just not interested in the current activities. And we have a few concerns over stability, after Directory Monitor crashed a couple of times on our test system for no apparent reason. Most of the time it worked perfectly, though, and Directory Monitor's extra configuration options are more than adequate compensation for the occasional hassle. So if FolderChangesView doesn't provide quite enough power for your needs, take a look at Directory Monitor - it's a very capable and configurable alternative.

Acronis announces private beta of True Image Home 2012

Acronis has released the first private beta of Acronis True Image Home 2012, its flagship backup tool. True Image, which combines drive-imaging, online and file-based backups in one program, is now available to Acronis account users. After registering, the beta can be downloaded and installed. Acronis True Image Home 2012 introduces a new file synchronisation feature, closer integration with Acronis Online Backup and a number of under-the-hood improvements as well as some other minor changes. The file synchronisation feature allows users to keep folders in sync between multiple computers and network devices such as NAS drives. Files can be synced directly between networked computers, or via the internet using Acronis Online Backup, which requires a separate subscription, although a single month’s trial offering 250GB is available. When this expires, however, no limited free subscription like the 5GB offered by dedicated online backup services such as AVG LiveKive and SugarSync is provided, so if a sub isn’t taken out, features that explicitly rely on Acronis Online Backup will stop working. Version 2012 also adds an e-book filter to the file-based backup, ensuring your electronic books can also be easily backed up and restored. Under the hood improvements include better integration into Windows 7 when the program’s icon is pinned to the Taskbar, plus support for large (over 2TB) hard drives even on OSes that don’t natively support them – specifically Windows XP 32-bit. Anyone who installs the True Image Home 2012 Plus Pack (a separate purchase) will also be interested to learn that it now adds full support for GUID Partition Table (GPT) disks and Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI). The Plus Pack won’t be available until the final version of True Image Home 2012 is released. Acronis say they will award 10 of the most prominent beta testers - those providing the most useful feedback - a free Acronis True Image 2012 serial code after the commercial version is released. Acronis True Image Home 2012 beta is available now for Acronis account holders, and will expire 15 August. Click here to register the software. PNotes 9 brings spellchecking, alarm and text-to-speed improvements

Sticky notes apps are nowhere near as prevalent as they used to be, but that’s not to say that they aren’t still incredibly useful. There are fully featured PIMs such as Outlook that have somewhat taken over the role of such programs, but when you try out PNotes, you’ll understand once again just how great a simple, dedicated utility can be. The program is available in portable and installable desktop varieties and both offer the same great set of feature and the latest release – version 9 – includes some great improvements and new features. Just because a note is a quick note, it does not mean that it needs to be misspelled, and the latest release of the app includes an all-important spell checking feature. While there is support for English by default, it is possible to install others that you want to use. PNotes is the type of app that you are likely to find that you end up using a great deal and if you start to create a lot of notes you will undoubtedly make use of the grouping option to keep related notes together. Another new feature of the app makes it possible to define the default skin and coloring for groups. PNotes A great feature of PNotes is the text-to-speech option that can be used to have notes and reminders voiced aloud to you. PNotes 9 adds the ability to adjust speed, pitch and volume so you can customize the voice to suit your tastes. If you’re using the app as a reminder tool, there is a new option that enables you to silence an alarm if it has been sounding for a certain period of time. This is a program that is packed with features, and a quick right click of the system tray icon and a browse through the preferences dialog will reveal the extent of what is possible. To make it quicker to perform common actions, it is now possible to define not only an action that should be performed when the system tray icon is double clicked, but also when it is single clicked. If you find that you are creating a large number of notes, you’ll find that the ability to tag notes is very useful, as these tags can then be used in searches. You can use the app to make notes while you make a phone call, or to jot down ideas you think of throughout the day. Support for formatting and the creation of lists means that this is an ideal app for drawing up shopping lists, to-dos and much more. This is an app that will help you to drop all of the scraps of paper that are littering your desk and could replace other calendar tools that you may be using. Universal USB Installer now supports, Deepin, LinHES, Trisquel and Satux Linux

The busy folks at Pen Drive Linux have updated their handy Universal USB Installer tool to support four more distros. Which means it can now convert live CDs of Deepin Linux, LinHES Linux, Trisquel Linux and Satux Linux to run on USB keys. And that's not bad at all, as the tool already supported all the usual big name distros (Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, OpenSUSE and more, each in multiple versions), as well as a lengthy list of Linux-based utilities: Gparted, System Rescue CD, and antivirus rescue CDs from AVG, Avira, BitDefender, F-Secure and Kaspersky, amongst others. If you're new to the Universal USB Installer, then it's a simple and portable tool which takes a Live CD in the form of an ISO file, and places that distribution onto a USB flash drive instead, so improving performance and allowing you to save files and settings as well (if the Live CD supports persistence). The program creates your Linux USB installation in just a few clicks While this sounds like a technical task (and in theory, it is), the program makes it very easy to use: essentially you just choose your distro from a list, point it at the ISO file (which the USB Installer can help you download, if necessary), choose the target USB drive, and it'll be prepared for you in a click. And even if you've no particular interest in Linux, the ability to list antivirus and other rescue CDs, download and convert them into a bootable form on a USB key could come in very useful, so the Universal USB Installer really does merit a place on everyone's PC. (Especially as it's a single, portable executable under 1MB in size; this isn't a program that's going to get in your way.) Keep in mind, though, that writing the distro files to your specified drive will overwrite anything that's already there. Check your USB drive contains nothing useful before you start, and make sure you don't point the Universal USB Installer at your system drive, instead, otherwise your existing setup will be trashed.

LockHunter: a capable and easy-to-use file unlocker

It should be simple. All you want to do is copy, move, maybe delete a particular file. And yet Windows won't allow it, complaining instead that the file is "in use". It's annoying, but don't give up: LockHunter can help. Once installed, a quick right-click displays a new "What is locking this file?" option, and if you choose this then LockHunter will pop up, telling you which process "owns" the file. Or that's the idea, anyway - the program would occasionally give odd results in our tests, though for the most part it worked just fine. Just knowing which process is holding on to a file can be very useful. And if it's not something system-critical then your next step should be to close it down. Which will free up the file, and allow you to do anything you like with it. If you can't close the process, though, just clicking "Unlock It!" will probably be enough to free up the file for you. But beware: there's no telling how the locking process will behave now. It might lose data, crash, even bring down your entire PC, there are no guarantees. You'll immediately see which process is holding your file There is one scenario where you'll probably want to continue with LockHunter anyway, though - and that's where you've identified a malware component and are trying (unsuccessfully) to delete it. This can be a real challenge, but the program provides a few additional options which could prove useful. Clicking Other > Unlock and Rename, for instance, will rename the file to whatever you choose. If this is a malicious executable then with any luck it won't be relaunched again. If you think the locking process is also malware then you can click Other > Close Locking Process to terminate it, and there's even a "Delete locking processes from disk" option to get rid of them forever. Of course deleting processes in this way is even more risky, and if you accidentally remove something important then you could crash your PC, and then find it won't boot up again. Don't even think of trying this unless you've a full system backup available. If you know what you're doing and are fully prepared, though, LockHunter provides a quick and easy way to unlock files and then delete, rename, copy or otherwise work with them. And if you ever need to manually remove malware then that can be very useful indeed.
