Things continue to develop apace in the world of Opera, with the latest snapshot of Opera Next showcasing camera support. The latest addition to the browser means that developers will now be able to use JavaScript to access webcams which opens up new levels of interactivity with web pages – everything from using your webcam as a color picker to simplifying the process of uploading a picture of yourself. There are obvious privacy concerns when web pages are allowed to access webcams, but Opera Next ensures that users are kept informed about what is going on and are given the chance to block or permit connection as they see fit. Whenever a page attempts to access your camera you will warned by the appearance of a popup which gives you the opportunity to block or allow the site on a permanent or one-off basis. Opera Next adds camera support Web sites are also able to make use of a site visitor’s location and changes have been made to Opera’s tabs to allow this information to be conveyed to the user. Whenever a site is making use of an attached camera or is using location information, badge icons are displayed in the relevant tab. Simple tab-based controls can then be used to make further changes to permission settings as and when required. As this is a very early snapshot of a future release of Opera, it is only reasonable to expect that there are going to be a few problems here and there. That said, things are already looking good and there are a few demonstration web sites that can be used to test out the capabilities of the new camera support – take a look at Photo Booth, Polaroid, Color Picker, Explode and Speedo for samples. You can find out more and download a free copy of the app by paying a visit to the Opera Next review page; there is also a 64-bit version of the program available.

IObit Software has released a public beta of a new file-unlocking tool. IObit Unlocker Beta 1.0 is designed to allow users to access files that have been locked by running programs or processes for the purposes of deleting, renaming, copying or moving. IObit Unlocker can be invoked from its own shortcut, or accessed by right-clicking any file and choosing IObit Unlocker, which will launch the program with that file selected. It will display what process is locking the file, and give the user various options for unlocking the file. The concept of IObit Unlocker is nothing new – similar freeware tools including Unlocker offer the same functionality, although IObit’s tool does have a slightly more attractive user interface. The program is best used for resolving simple issues – for example, when the user has several files open in a program and wishes to delete or move one without having to shut down the entire application first in order to unlock the file in question. At present there is no delete on reboot option, which can be used on more stubborn files. Those looking for such functionality should take a look at MoveOnBoot instead. IObit Unlocker Beta 1.0 is freeware and available now for PCs running Windows XP or later.

Australian software developer Auslogics has released major updates for two of its Windows performance tools. Auslogics BoostSpeed 5.3.0.0 is the company’s flagship tool, an all-in-one performance manager, while Auslogics Disk Defrag 3.4.3.0 - whose functionality is included in BoostSpeed – provides a free (for personal use) hard drive optimization tool. The latest build includes numerous feature additions, performance improvements and bug fixes, plus introduces “partial” compatibility with Windows 8, with full compatibility promised for version 5.4. Both BoostSpeed and Disk Defrag introduce a new free space availability check before the user creates a Rescue Center backup, allowing them to either abort the entire operation or proceed without the safety net of a backup. The Rescue Center is now also capable of creating and restoring backups that are larger than 2GB in size. A new 'Forced Remove' option is added to BoostSpeed 5's Uninstall Manager component. Defrag-specific improvements include improved SSD detection, which helps automatically enable a special defrag algorithm for solid-state drives, plus better use of system resources to boost overall stability. Other changes are specific to BoostSpeed, starting with the integrated launcher (Integrator), which now offers to make a Restore point when first launched and automatically checks for updates. The Both Startup Manager and Uninstall Manager components feature a tweaked user interface that allows the user to get detailed ratings of individual start-up or application entries simply by hovering the mouse over the respective column. The interface also adds a new ‘Google it’ button to the toolbar for those wishing to learn more about the selected item. The Uninstall Manager also introduces a new Forced Remove option for viewing – and deleting – a program’s files, Registry keys and system components even when the installer is no longer present. Other modules also receive minor tweaks – notably the File Recovery tool has an improved search conditions selection wizard to allow the user to jump to a specific part of the wizard using default settings, while the Registry Cleaner has regrouped the categories list to provide a more intuitive presentation. The latest builds of both BoostSpeed and Disk Defrag also introduce performance improvements via optimized code and algorithms, plus the fixing of various memory leaks. They also claim to fix all known bugs as well as various installer errors. Auslogic Disk Defrag 3.4.3.0 is a free (for personal) use download, while Auslogic BoostSpeed 5.3.0.0 is also available as a free trial download. Both require PCs running Windows XP or later. A three-PC, 12-month subscription to Auslogic BoostSpeed 5.3.0.0 is currently available for just $14.95 – a saving of 70% on the MSRP – through the Downloadcrew Software Store.

Copying files in Windows is normally as easy as a quick drag and drop - but if they're locked, it's a different story. An error message will warn you that the file is in use, and you're left to resolve the situation yourself, or just try again later. One alternative is to run a backup program, as most can use Microsoft's Volume Shadow Service to copy locked files. But this could seem like overkill, especially for only occasional ad-hoc copies, which is why you might prefer the simpler and more lightweight ShadowCopy. The program installs easily, and is very straightforward to use. At its most basic, you can just specify the source and destination folders, the files you'd like to copy (*.*, *.docx or whatever), click Copy and wait as the files are transferred. ShadowCopy displays all its options in one simple dialog box If you need a little more control then ShadowCopy does provide a few extra options. You can decide whether it should copy subdirectories, for instance, or overwrite existing files, just by checking a box or two. And if you want to do this regularly - or automatically - then the program's support for command line switches means you can run it from a script. For example, something like "shadowcopy c:\*.* d:\ /s" will copy everything on your C:\ drive - even if it's locked - to D:\, including all subfolders. This is all presented in a very basic way, and needs to be used with some care. Once you've initiated a copy, for instance, there's no way to cancel it. And in our tests the program allowed you to click Copy, even if a copy is already running, which caused such confusion that it shut down almost immediately. If you only use ShadowCopy occasionally, though (or from a script), then this probably won't matter too much, and on balance it's still a quick and easy way to copy locked files.

If you really need a particular video file then the web is packed with tools to help. Install something like Orbit Downloader, say, and it's easy to capture that movie trailer, streaming video, or whatever else has caught your attention. Of course if you want to play it on your phone or iPod, edit the video or burn it to DVD then you'll often need to convert it to a more useful format. And there's no more capable tool for this kind of media encoding than SUPER. Launch the program (right-click its shortcut and select Run As Administrator if you're using Vista) and the sheer volume of options on offer can seem intimidating, but relax, it's easier than it looks. Browse the Output Container list and you'll find a list of presets that will set up the program for common tasks. If you have a video that you want to convert to 3GP for a mobile, MP4 for an iPhone, iPod or PS3, or just a VOB file to burn to DVD, then choose the relevant option here and everything else will be set up for you. If there's no easy preset than you can still set things up manually. If you just want a video that's compact and easy for you and other PCs to play, for instance, choose the AVI output container. Select DivX or XviD as the Output video codec, and MP3 as the Output audio codec. Choose the resolution and frame rate you need, and set the Bitrate to define the quality and file size you'd like (1000 is low resolution but small, 6000 plus is DVD quality but large). Enable the final options you need - we check Hi Quality, Top Quality and 48K audio for the best files - and adjust audio quality if you need it. Then drag and drop your files onto the working area (or right-click the program and select Add Multimedia Files to add them manually) and click Encode to begin the conversion process. This makes heavy use of the CPU, so we would recommend you just leave your PC alone for a while until Super has finished. It shouldn't be too long - we've found the program is significantly faster than most of the competition. SUPER's an excellent way to convert video files between various formats, then, but that's just one of its abilities. It can also extract the audio track from a video, convert from one audio format to another, even create an animated GIF (select the GIF output container), or sequentially join video files (convert part1.avi and part2.avi into everything.avi). This can be a little complicated sometimes, but if you're happy to experiment, try different options, then we think you'll come to agree that SUPER is one of the best media encoders around.

If malware somehow manages to penetrate your PCs defences then it's easy to assume you'll simply download some other antivirus tool to remove it. But life may not be so straightforward. Once installed, some malware will try to prevent you from reaching big antivirus sites, and downloading or running their tools, making the problem much more difficult to tackle. Unless, that is, you have a copy of Malwarebytes Chameleon to hand. The program is essentially just a collection of tiny portable tools, each of which aims to do the same thing: download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, install it, launch the program and kill any known malicious processes. And it does all of this automatically, with no problems, no folder selections, no licence agreements or anything else, making Chameleon extremely easy to use. Just double-click a Chameleon file and it'll try to download, install and run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware But the key element here is that each of these tiny tools has a disguised name, in the hope that it'll be much more difficult for any installed malware to intercept. Malwarebytes understand that a virus is most unlikely to block your browser, for instance, because it wants you to run your system as normal for as long as possible. And so they've included executables called "firefox.exe", "firefox.scr" and "iexplore.exe"; double-click one of these and with any luck it should run, download and install Anti-Malware. And there are several other files which use a similar approach. Chameleon includes "Rundll32.exe" and "Svchost.exe", for instance, which are key Windows components; again, malware won't block these by name as it'll cripple your PC, so if "firefox.exe" and "iexplore.exe" don't work then try these instead. Plainly this isn't a perfect scheme, because a virus could be written specifically to block Chameleon. It would just have to look beyond the executable name to check the program's folder, say, or the file size. In which case you'll probably need to use another PC to download bootable environment such as Avira's AntiVir Rescue System, which will then allow you to properly disinfect the system. Most malware doesn't do this, though, and so for the moment Malwarebytes Chameleon provides a quick, easy and extremely convenient way to try and disinfect any PC.
