Detect wifi intruders with Wireless Network Watcher

If you'd like to keep your wireless network secure then turning on the best possible encryption is usually a very good place to start. There may still be room for problems, though (as I discovered, when my brother accidentally turned off his encryption entirely while trying to set up a TV), so it could be worth using NirSoft's Wireless Network Watcher to keep a lookout for wifi intruders. As usual with NirSoft programs, Wireless Network Watcher is compact in the extreme, a tiny download (even when unpacked it requires less than 700KB drive space) which requires no installation: just unzip it and go. And by default the program will then run a quick inventory of your network, returning various details for every device it encounters: IP address, device name, MAC address  and the device manufacturer (sometimes, anyway). Wireless Network Watcher makes it easy to see what's connected to your network at any one time Click Options > Background Scan, Options > Beep On New Device, though, and the program will run regular scans of your network, alerting you to any unexpected visitors it might find. How often? The program runs a "continuous" background scan, apparently. This sounds a little alarming, but the Help file claims that "the background scan is slower and less intensive then the regular scan, so it won't overload your computer". And as Task Manager shows no real resource use at all, we think this is probably true. If you're concerned, though, clicking Options > Advanced Options allows you to choose how often the background scan is run. And you're able to customise what happens when a new device is detected, too, with options to play a custom audio file, or execute the command of your choice. As wireless monitoring systems go, Wireless Network Watcher is, well, plainly a little on the basic side. It's also free, effective, lightweight, configurable and very easy to use, though, and if your security needs are simple then the program will probably serve you very well.

Power up your app titlebar menus with WindowMenuPlus

Sometimes Windows can be really frustrating, with lots of useful tweaks and tools buried away beneath layers of dialog boxes and hard-to-reach system tools. WindowMenuPlus 1.1 aims to place some really useful tweaks for your apps on to the menu that pops up when you either right-click its titlebar or taskbar button (Vista and XP only). Options include being able to keep the current window on top of other windows (and make it semi-transparent at the same time), team a program’s priorities, kill its parent process, get more information about it and quickly reposition or resize the window a number of custom ways. Once installed, WindowMenuPlus resides in the Taskbar’s Notification area where you can selectively show or hide the various options it offers, or you can ignore this, fire up a program and see what new functions are available by right-clicking its titlebar. “Keep on top” ensures the application window doesn’t disappear behind other program windows as they’re brought into focus, which has most use on small handy apps like the Calculator. If you find these apps distracting, and don’t want to move them out of the way to view the windows beneath, you can also set degrees of transparency to ensure the content beneath the window can be seen through it. Windows 7 introduced the Aero Snap feature, whereby dragging the window to one side of the screen or the other resized it to take up half the available screen space. WindowMenuPlus takes this even further, with a host of options underneath the Move to and Maximize to windows. Move to” allows you to pin the window to any screen edge or align it centrally, while “Maximize to” includes options for resizing windows to fit on the edges and corners, making it easy to set up dual- and four-paned windows. You can also maximise the window by its width or height only. Techies will enjoy options such as being able to kill the parent process, set the program’s priority or free up any unused memory the program has harnessed. You can also opt to open the program’s folder with a single click, view lots of useful information about the program (this can all be copied to the Windows clipboard for diagnostic purposes) and even minimize the program to the Notification area instead of the Taskbar. There are some drawbacks: any configured options are lost when the program is closed, and it won’t work with all applications, specifically those that don’t utilise the standard Windows menu bars – including Google Chrome and later versions of Microsoft Office. Despite these shortcomings – an option to remember a program’s options would be incredibly useful in a future version – WindowMenuPlus remains an interesting tool that could prove useful to anyone who struggles to manage multiple windows and applications on a single desktop. WindowsMenuPlus is a free download for personal and non-commercial use, and works on any PC running Windows XP, Vista, 7 and Server.

The big new this week has been in the cloud, and there have been various developments in the world of online storage. After what seems like years of waiting, Google Drive 1.0 has finally been released, extending the idea of Docs and providing users with the opportunity to store any files they want online and keept them synched with their computers. There’s also a mobile version of the app available - Google Drive for Android 1.0.77 – that enables you to access your files on the move. Ubuntu One 2.0.3 has nothing whatsoever to do with the operating system of the same name, but provides you with 5GB of free space for storage and backups. Cloud storage stalwart Dropbox 1.4.0 has been updated and has finally become stable as well as adding batch uploading and importing of photo while Microsoft has released Microsoft SkyDrive 2012 v16.4 and Microsoft SkyDrive 2.0 iOS with reduced storage levels. IObit Uninstaller For managing the space on your local hard drive, IObit Uninstaller 2.2 enables you to keep things need and tidy by removing unnecessary program and toolbars, while CCleaner 3.18 and CCleaner 3.18 Portable provide you with more advanced cleanup options. If you find that Explorer is too limited for your file management needs, XYplorer 11.00 provides you with a dual-paned interface and a host of feature that make it easy to work with files and folders – albeit at a price. VirtualBox 4.1.14 has been updated for anyone looking to virtualize an operating system, fixing a range of known issues while VirtualBox Extension Pack 4.1.14 adds handy extra features such as a USB 2.0 controller. Firefox Nightly This has been a big week for Firefox with the release of Firefox 12 FINAL and Firefox 12 Portable 12 which have now moved into the stable channel, although there isn’t a great deal to look at in terms of new features. Firefox 13 Beta feature a redesigned New Tab pages, while Firefox Aurora 14.0a2 adds support for Windows 8’s Metro interface. Norton Identity Safe There have been an number of noteworthy security releases this week including Emsisoft Anti-Malware 6.5.0.11 which keeps your computer free from unwanted nasties and includes speed improvemens as well as new plugins for Outlook. Norton Identity Safe 2012.6.0.72, Norton Identity Safe iOS 1.0.50 and Norton Identity Safe Android 1.0.1 are new, free tools from Symantec that can be used to securely store password in an encrypted database and quickly enter personal information into online forms. Not contents with updating SkyDrive and announcing a future update to the public preview of Windows 8, Microsoft have also release Microsoft Security Essentials 4 FINAL [32-bit] and Microsoft Security Essentials 4 FINAL [64-bit] which boasts improved performance and is available free of charge for small businesses. LinkedIn Getting a little more creative, CyberLink Media Suite 10 Ultra is a staggeringly feature-packed suite that comprising no less than eleven separate tools for viewing, editing, managing and sharing your media collection. If you encode videos yourself, you will know exactly what format it is in, but you may well encounter other videos online that you find that you are not able to play back. This may well be because you do not have the necessary codecs installed and this is where codec packs are useful; released this week were K-Lite Codec Pack Basic 8.7.0, K-Lite Codec Pack Standard 8.7.0,  K-Lite Codec Pack Mega 8.7.0 and K-Lite Codec Pack Full 8.7.0. The final releases in this week’s roundup will be of interest to mobile users. Twitter 4.2 for iOS and Twitter 3.2.0 for Android have been updated to feature better push notifications as well as a redesigned Discover section. SugarSync for iOS 4.0 boasts elegant redesign, integrates with other apps

SugarSync, Inc has released SugarSync for iOS 4.0, a major new release for iPad and iPhone owners wishing access to their SugarSync cloud storage on the move. Version 4.0.0 features a major redesign designed to simplify syncing and sharing, plus integrates with other apps through the "Open in" feature. The update also adds support for Device Filtering, a feature recently introduced in the SugarSync 2.0.9 desktop app for Windows and Mac, along with Cloud Search, and promises future support for folder labels. The redesign in SugarSync 4.0 mirrors that found in the desktop and Android apps that were released in February. The aim is to streamline the app’s look and make it easier to navigate. In particular, the design is geared towards simplifying access to recently synced content from other devices, plus makes it easier to both share and view shared content from others thanks to new Shared by Me and Shared with Me tabs. SugarSync for iOS 4.0 shows off its new sleek, more user-friendly look. The iOS app also introduces support for the recently implemented Device Filter, which allows users to sync only specific folders to the cloud from their devices. This feature allows users to view all synced folders or restrict browsing to those shared with a specific computer or mobile. The new feature has also inspired the Cloud Search tool, which makes it possible for users to search across their entire online storage, not just those folders synced with the iPad or iPhone. From here users can then choose to sync, share or view individual files. SugarSync now fully supports the iOS “Open in” feature, which allows users to save content to their SugarSync storage from other apps such as Mail or Pages, plus open documents already stored on SugarSync’s servers in compatible apps on the iPad or iPhone. The desktop update introduced folder labels, and support for this feature is promised in a future version. SugarSync for iOS 4.0.0 is available now as a free download, as are SugarSync 2.0.9 for Windows and Mac, and SugarSync for Android 4.0.1. SugarSync offers a free 5GB storage plan, as well as paid-for plans, with prices starting from $7.49 a month ($74.99 a year) for 60GB.

Chrome 13 beta released, gains Print Preview, PDF output, prerendering speedup

It's taken a long time. A very, very long time. But, at last, the latest Chrome 13 beta sees the browser finally gain a Print Preview function. And this isn't just some half-finished beta version, either - it's really quite impressive. To see it this action, just click Print and the preview will appear in a new tab (which seems more natural than the "special" window used in some other browsers). You're able to choose your destination printer from a list, which includes Chrome's own Print to PDF option. You can select your preferred page layout (portrait or landscape), or choose colour or black and white output and the preview window updates immediately. Of course you also get all the usual settings, like the pages to print and the number of copies, and when you're happy then clicking Print will deliver the finished results. Another interesting addition this time around is support for prerendering. The idea is that when you carry out a Google search, Chrome will be able to prerender the top search result, if it's confident you'll click on this. And so if you actually do click on the link then it'll pop up more or less instantly. (See this Google blog post for more details.) Elsewhere, the Omnibox gains support for partial matching, so if you enter just part of one of the words in a page title or URL from your browsing history then it'll be presented as a suggestion (welcome news, though really that should have been there in the first place). And of course there are a host of smaller additions, bug-fixes and speedups. As usual, they're detailed in the SVN revision log, but you'll need to be really interested to wade through the list - there are more than 5,000 changes in total.
