PNotes 9 brings spellchecking, alarm and text-to-speed improvements

Sticky notes apps are nowhere near as prevalent as they used to be, but that’s not to say that they aren’t still incredibly useful. There are fully featured PIMs such as Outlook that have somewhat taken over the role of such programs, but when you try out PNotes, you’ll understand once again just how great a simple, dedicated utility can be. The program is available in portable and installable desktop varieties and both offer the same great set of feature and the latest release – version 9 – includes some great improvements and new features. Just because a note is a quick note, it does not mean that it needs to be misspelled, and the latest release of the app includes an all-important spell checking feature. While there is support for English by default, it is possible to install others that you want to use. PNotes is the type of app that you are likely to find that you end up using a great deal and if you start to create a lot of notes you will undoubtedly make use of the grouping option to keep related notes together. Another new feature of the app makes it possible to define the default skin and coloring for groups. PNotes A great feature of PNotes is the text-to-speech option that can be used to have notes and reminders voiced aloud to you. PNotes 9 adds the ability to adjust speed, pitch and volume so you can customize the voice to suit your tastes. If you’re using the app as a reminder tool, there is a new option that enables you to silence an alarm if it has been sounding for a certain period of time. This is a program that is packed with features, and a quick right click of the system tray icon and a browse through the preferences dialog will reveal the extent of what is possible. To make it quicker to perform common actions, it is now possible to define not only an action that should be performed when the system tray icon is double clicked, but also when it is single clicked. If you find that you are creating a large number of notes, you’ll find that the ability to tag notes is very useful, as these tags can then be used in searches. You can use the app to make notes while you make a phone call, or to jot down ideas you think of throughout the day. Support for formatting and the creation of lists means that this is an ideal app for drawing up shopping lists, to-dos and much more. This is an app that will help you to drop all of the scraps of paper that are littering your desk and could replace other calendar tools that you may be using. Universal USB Installer now supports, Deepin, LinHES, Trisquel and Satux Linux

The busy folks at Pen Drive Linux have updated their handy Universal USB Installer tool to support four more distros. Which means it can now convert live CDs of Deepin Linux, LinHES Linux, Trisquel Linux and Satux Linux to run on USB keys. And that's not bad at all, as the tool already supported all the usual big name distros (Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, OpenSUSE and more, each in multiple versions), as well as a lengthy list of Linux-based utilities: Gparted, System Rescue CD, and antivirus rescue CDs from AVG, Avira, BitDefender, F-Secure and Kaspersky, amongst others. If you're new to the Universal USB Installer, then it's a simple and portable tool which takes a Live CD in the form of an ISO file, and places that distribution onto a USB flash drive instead, so improving performance and allowing you to save files and settings as well (if the Live CD supports persistence). The program creates your Linux USB installation in just a few clicks While this sounds like a technical task (and in theory, it is), the program makes it very easy to use: essentially you just choose your distro from a list, point it at the ISO file (which the USB Installer can help you download, if necessary), choose the target USB drive, and it'll be prepared for you in a click. And even if you've no particular interest in Linux, the ability to list antivirus and other rescue CDs, download and convert them into a bootable form on a USB key could come in very useful, so the Universal USB Installer really does merit a place on everyone's PC. (Especially as it's a single, portable executable under 1MB in size; this isn't a program that's going to get in your way.) Keep in mind, though, that writing the distro files to your specified drive will overwrite anything that's already there. Check your USB drive contains nothing useful before you start, and make sure you don't point the Universal USB Installer at your system drive, instead, otherwise your existing setup will be trashed.

LockHunter: a capable and easy-to-use file unlocker

It should be simple. All you want to do is copy, move, maybe delete a particular file. And yet Windows won't allow it, complaining instead that the file is "in use". It's annoying, but don't give up: LockHunter can help. Once installed, a quick right-click displays a new "What is locking this file?" option, and if you choose this then LockHunter will pop up, telling you which process "owns" the file. Or that's the idea, anyway - the program would occasionally give odd results in our tests, though for the most part it worked just fine. Just knowing which process is holding on to a file can be very useful. And if it's not something system-critical then your next step should be to close it down. Which will free up the file, and allow you to do anything you like with it. If you can't close the process, though, just clicking "Unlock It!" will probably be enough to free up the file for you. But beware: there's no telling how the locking process will behave now. It might lose data, crash, even bring down your entire PC, there are no guarantees. You'll immediately see which process is holding your file There is one scenario where you'll probably want to continue with LockHunter anyway, though - and that's where you've identified a malware component and are trying (unsuccessfully) to delete it. This can be a real challenge, but the program provides a few additional options which could prove useful. Clicking Other > Unlock and Rename, for instance, will rename the file to whatever you choose. If this is a malicious executable then with any luck it won't be relaunched again. If you think the locking process is also malware then you can click Other > Close Locking Process to terminate it, and there's even a "Delete locking processes from disk" option to get rid of them forever. Of course deleting processes in this way is even more risky, and if you accidentally remove something important then you could crash your PC, and then find it won't boot up again. Don't even think of trying this unless you've a full system backup available. If you know what you're doing and are fully prepared, though, LockHunter provides a quick and easy way to unlock files and then delete, rename, copy or otherwise work with them. And if you ever need to manually remove malware then that can be very useful indeed.

CyberLink PowerDVD 13: better image quality, easier to use and faster than ever

CyberLink has unveiled PowerDVD 13, the latest edition of its popular media player. And it's an interesting upgrade with new features wherever you look. New support for APE and AVCHD 2.0 1080p/3D extends your playback support, for instance, while everyone will benefit from a new focus on performance. The media player has been optimised to deliver an "instant start", while new BD-Live Bypass technology means Blu-ray playback is 58% faster than PowerDVD 12. A new Movie Library organises your MKV and MP4 files, DVD and Blu-ray discs in a single folder, with cover art, and links to more information on the movie. New conveniences include the ability to resume watching a movie just where you left off, and you can add comments and connect with friends via social media. CyberLink's latest now supports even more media formats The playback interface has been revamped. There are more straightforward controls, which can instantly be hidden; it's easier to find movie scenes; you can jump backwards and forwards through a video via the keyboard, and a new speed navigator helps you set fast or slow motion playback. (And if you're still not happy, new configuration options allow you to customise the interface, change hotkeys, mouse wheel actions and more.) PowerDVD 2013′s TrueTheater technology is now even available for Full HD video, automatically sharpening the picture, optimising colours and lighting for the best possible image quality. And there's also a new mini Music Player; an all-new subtitle engine with dual subtitle support; and various Windows 8 additions, including touch optimisation, and a Windows 8 edition of PowerDVD's Mobile app. As usual, PowerDVD 2013 comes in three edition. Deluxe ($54.95) is the base, with core media and DVD playback issues; Pro ($79.95) adds Blu-ray support, while Ultra ($99.95) includes 3D support, smart device syncing, full DLNA support, 7.1 audio and more. Not exactly cheap, then, but PowerDVD 2013 does at least have some worthwhile new features to help justify the cost. The performance and interface enhancements are particularly welcome, and if you need a high-end media player then PowerDVD 13 is still worth a look.

Nitro PDF Reader 1.4 adds intelligent hyperlink recognition

Nitro PDF Software has released version 1.4 of their PDF Reader, a small but worthwhile update that contains a number of useful time-saving features. And top of the list is their new intelligent hyperlink recognition, a simple but welcome addition that should get help you to bypass a common PDF annoyance. You've seen it many times: your PDF document includes a URL, but it's in plain text, and therefore clicking it has precisely no effect at all. Which is irritating. Nitro PDF Reader actually scans the document ahead of time and converts plain text web addresses into active links, though, so there's no need to manually open a browser window and paste the address - you can simply click the URL to open a site, as the author intended. If you ever have to close a PDF file before you've finished reading it, then there's more good news: Nitro PDF Reader 1.4 should remember and restore your last page, along with the page view and zoom settings, when you next re-open the file. Or, at least, that's the theory. In practice we found this didn't work when the program was installed, as the feature was turned off by default. Fortunately it can easily be enabled from PDF Reader's settings (File > Preferences > Interface, check "Restore last view settings when reopening documents"). And elsewhere there are a range of tweaks to existing features, which generally makes the program more intuitive and easier to use. So, for instance, the Ctrl+A keypress now selects the entire document, which we'd expect, rather than just the current page (which we really wouldn't). You can now toggle full screen view by pressing F11, just as in Firefox and Internet Explorer. And the Output Pane is hidden unless it has something to display, helping to deliver a cleaner, simpler interface. These are only small incremental changes, then, but in combination they all help make Nitro PDF Reader 1.4 an even more usable alternative to Adobe Reader. The program remains free of charge, and it's available now.

Laplink PCmover makes it easy to migrate programs and settings to a new PC

Have you just bought a new computer and dreading the prospect of installing all of your favourite programs and configuring Windows to your liking? Laplink PCmover can help to make the transition as easy as possible enabling you to quickly and simply transfer not only your files from one computer to another, but also software and settings. To make the migration as painless as possible, a few preparatory steps are needed. Data can be transferred using a special USB cable, removal media, or a network connection. Making use of a network connection is by far the quickest option (and this is how we will proceed), so it is worth networking your new computer before getting started. PCmover will need to be installed on both your old computer and your new one, but it needs to be run on the new machine first. Launch the program and indicate that you are using your new computer before selecting how you intend to transfer data from one machine to the other. The program will analyse your computer and prompt you when it is time to run PCmover on your old computer. Move to your old computer, launch PCmover and indicate that this is the old machine before choosing the migration method again. The program will then spend a little time collecting together all of the information that needs to be transferred before starting the migration process. Depending on the amount of data involved, the migration could take anything from a few minutes to several hours, but when the process is complete, your new computer will be ready to use complete with all of your familiar programs and settings.

This latest service pack adds the ad tracker blocking as well as protection against spoofed wifi networks and there’s also a service pack for the company’s famous AV tool, AVG Anti-Virus 2012 SP1 (v12.0.2126). Google Chrome There are often weeks that seem to be dominated by web browsers, and this week is no different. Google Chrome 18 FINAL sees a new version of Google’s browser entering the stable channel and there is also a portable version available in the form of Google Chrome Portable 18.0.1025.137 Beta. The new stable release means that there is now Google Chrome 19.0.1084.1 Dev for anyone who likes to be at the cutting edge, and Google Chrome Portable 19.0.1077.3 Dev is available if you want to pop the browser on a USB drive. The release of a new version of Chrome means that there is also a new version of speed and security optimized variant Comodo Dragon 18 FINAL, while Apple Safari 5.1.5 is a more minor release. Pale Moon If this does not give you enough choice for browsing the web, take a look at Opera Next 12.00 build 1351 or Opera Next 12.00 build 1251 (64-bit). Neither version offer huge difference from their predecessors, but the march of development continues – but Opera 11.62 FINAL now provides better HTML5 support and a raft of other improvements. There isn’t a new version of Firefox just at the moment, but Pale Moon 11.0.1 and Pale Moon x64 11.0.1 are the latest version of the Firefox 11 based browser, bringing various improvements including better HTML5 and CSS3 support.
