Although ISO files are a very convenient way to distribute software, then can often be very large, perhaps gigabytes in size. And if you only need maybe one or two files from the image, having to download the whole thing first will probably seem just a little annoying. There could be an alternative, though. Re7zip is an interesting Java-based tool which can remotely extract files from an http-hosted archive, without having to download the full archive first - and in some situations that could save you an enormous amount of time. The program is based around 7zip, as you might guess from the name, and that means it's not restricted to ISO files. Rather, you're able to access everything that 7zip can, a very lengthy list of formats: 7z, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR, ZIP, WIM, ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, CramFS, DEB, DMG, FAT, HFS, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MBR, MSI, NSIS, NTFS, RAR, RPM, SquashFS, UDF, VHD, WIM, XAR and Z. re7zip is fussy about syntax, making it less than easy to use What you don't get here is 7zip's ease of use, unfortunately. Re7zip has to be run from the command line, and isn't quite as straightforward as we'd like. A typical remote extraction might look something like this. java -java re7zip.jar /t=iso /a=http://www.site.com/folder/file.iso /e=folder\file.txt /o=file.txt Here the /t switch tells the program the type of your archive; /a points to the archive you'd like to access; /e highlights the file within the archive which you'd like to extract, and /o indicates the output file name you'd like to generate locally. As command lines go, this isn't exactly complex, but one problem here is that re7zip is rather strict about its syntax. During testing we omitted the /o switch, for instance, thinking the program would simply keep the original file name when it saved the downloaded copy. But no, it just didn't work (and there was no clear explanation about why, either). And of course one major limitation with all this is that you have to know the precise name and location of the file you'd like to extract from your archive. It would be enormously helpful if you could ask Re7zip to display the contents of a specified remote archive, but unfortunately that option isn't yet available. For all this, re7zip is still an excellent tool. There's no hassles with installation (it's a single file), you get support for a host of archive types, and in some situations it could save you a huge amount of time. There is also plenty of scope to make the program even better, though, and we hope the author will revisit and enhance it in the future.

With digital cameras continuing to improve in quality, just as they fall in price, it's never been easier to shoot High Definition movies - even on your mobile phone. To get the most out of your movies you'll need software that's up to the HD challenge, though. And that's where Nero Video Premium HD comes in. The suite includes two components. Nero MediaHub handles your media management needs, providing simple ways to view, sort and search your videos, digital photos, music files and Blu-ray discs. And its beginner-friendly slideshow maker allows you to create professional movies and slideshows in a click. Meanwhile Nero Vision's multi-track editor, quality video effects and Blu-ray authoring capabilities ensure it's up to the challenge of more complex editing and creative projects. If this sounds like a familiar mix, it may be because the core apps have been bundled together before, as a part of Nero Vision Xtra. Nero Video Premium HD sees them extended and enhanced, though, with many new features. If you need a consumer HD editing package with a little something extra then it's worth taking a look at them again. Nero MediaHub MediaHub wants to manage all your media files, which can often be a difficult task. The interface helps out immediately, though, by providing a left-hand pane that provides quick access to many areas of your system. So for instance your music, photos and videos are divided into separate libraries, and a single click will have you viewing any of these in the program's thumbnail browser. You're then able to play or view them, get song information via the Gracenote Media Database, or edit a file's existing tags. There's a simple photo editor, that can crop images or remove red-eye. There are one-click fixes to tweak exposure and colour; manual sliders for adjusting brightness, lighting, colour temperature, even image straightness; and simple effects to blur or sharpen an image, apply a sepia tint, and so on. And it's just as easy to select multiple files, then create playlists or burn your selection to disc. There are no complicated burning options, no settings to consider: just choose the files, click the Burn button, select your optical drive and click Burn again. It's all very straightforward. If the default library - your public and personal Videos, Music and Pictures folders - isn't enough then you can tell MediaHub to watch whatever other folders are appropriate to your system. And, usefully, this version of the program can now show and let you work with iTunes and Windows Media Player library content, giving a unified view across all your digital media. Nero Video Premium HD also includes Blu-ray playback support, so now inserting either a DVD or Blu-ray disc will add a new icon under the Optical Discs, and you can be watching your movie in a couple of clicks. And if you're looking to share your media, then the Slide Shows feature makes it very easy indeed. All you need to do is select multiple photos or videos, and click the Create Slide Show button. You can then apply a custom "theme" to your slideshow - Holidays, Kids and Families, Romantic, Seasonal and more - which defines the slideshow background, music and more. And immediately the program will produce a very professional slideshow, with for example pan-and-zoom effects on your photos; our first effort looked more like a segment from a TV show than something we'd thrown together in 30 seconds. You can customise your work a little more if you like, though, perhaps adding opening and closing titles, tweaking background music or slide duration, or setting the number of seconds each slide will be displayed. Or, if you need more power, one click will open the project in Nero Vision for more in-depth editing. And when you've finished, you're able to burn the project to CD or Blu-ray, or upload it directly to YouTube, Facebook, Flickr, MySpace, or Nero's own My Nero community. There are some limitations here. You can't tag images, for instance, or look at their metadata, which is a shame. And more advanced options like face tagging are a distant dream. Still, for general purposes MediaHub really is an excellent media organiser, packed with useful features. But of course if you're buying Nero Video Premium HD for its editing capabilities, then you'll want much more than the simple Slide Shows applet can offer, and for that you'll need to turn to the suite's second component. Nero Vision If you've any experience with Windows video editing software then the Nero Vision interface will immediately seem quite familiar. There's a My Media section top-right, for instance, that holds the videos, pictures, audio and other files that you'd like to use. You can drag and drop files here, or use the Import option to read data from (non-copy-protected) DVDs or Blu-ray discs, AVCHD files, any video or audio capture device on your PC, even PowerPoint files (useful, though importing them is glacially slow). To the left of the My Media palette is a preview window where you can view your selected files, and at the bottom of the screen is a timeline and storyboard: you'll drag and drop your files here to build up the finished movie. Below your Media files is the Effect Palette, which provides quick access and basic previews of the video, text and transition effects on offer here. There's a decent selection, too, with filters to fix brightness, colour and lighting problems; a few sharpens and blurs; some panes and zooms; quality chroma key and image matter effects; various "Art Effect" options like Old Film, Posterize and Sketch; and more. Considerably more, actually, not least because Nero Video Premium HD includes Nero's "Video TransitionPack 1″, which adds 60 generally interesting and worthwhile transition effects to the host of dissolves, slides, zooms, wipes and other transition options already on offer. Fortunately the program now also has a Favourites section for your Effects, Text and Transition palettes, so despite these extras it is, if anything, even easier to find your way around. A right-click on any effect will add it to the relevant Favourites list, and you can then jump straight to your most commonly-used options in a click or two. Drag and drop them onto a particular clip and they'll be applied right away. There's also a new Picture-in-Picture (PiP) generator, which greatly simplifies the process of creating PiP effects by allowing you to choose the option you need from a categorised list. So for instance you can choose from PiP effects that take place over an existing video track, or a static background. And you get to decide whether you want one, two, three or four PiP overlays, and how they appear and disappear. Double-click your PiP selection, then, and placeholders for the clips appear on your timeline. Drag and drop the videos you'd like to appear in each PiP overlay onto the placeholders, and, well, that's it - click Play and watch your creation in action. It's generally very straightforward and produced excellent results in our tests. Nero Vision is just about easy enough for editing beginners to handle, then. The interface can be a little intimidating, but once you've learned the basics then drag and drop and tweaking a few properties will generally get you where you want to go. Meanwhile advanced users will appreciate some of the more creative filters on offer, like the chroma key and alpha adjust options. And there's complete key frame control: you can step between existing key frames, create new ones, even choose the most appropriate interpolation method (the default Linear, Bezier, or Hold for a sudden change with no transition). And whatever your experience, once you've finished you can save the finished video as a file, upload it online (YouTube, MySpace or My Nero), or make a CD, DVD, AVCHD or Blu-ray disc with the movie. The latter options are particularly interesting, and in fact you can use them without touching the editor at all. Just import the files you need, choose your disc menu templates (there are static 2D, and animated 2D and 3D options on offer), customise them to suit your needs, then burn your disc with a click. CUDA support ensures that any necessary transcoding happens at high speed, and the high quality end results make this a great way to archive your favourite movies for yourself, or create something special to share with friends and family.

Vladimir Yuzhikov has released the first beta of SmartDeblur 2.0, a powerful tool for recovering data from blurred images. Top of the new features list is an "auto-detect blur" option, which allows the program to automatically figure out whether your image is suffering from motion, Gaussian, or just plain old out-of-focus blur, and perform the appropriate corrections. And as a result, there's no need to try and guess this yourself (although you can manually choose a blur type, if appropriate) - just open an image, click "Analyze Blur", and within two or three minutes you'll be presented with the results. It's easier than ever to recover detail from blurred pictures As with the previous edition, SmartDeblur 2.0 beta comes with a sample image to illustrate its capabilities - and they really can be spectacular. It's just astonishing how much detail can be recovered in some cases (it's much more than basic sharpening). We did also find many images where the first pass delivered terrible results, but there is something else you can try. If you're trying to highlight one element in particular - a person standing against a wall, say - then click and drag on the image to draw a rectangle around them, and then click "Analyze Blur". SmartDeblur then restricts its checks to the area you've highlighted, and in our tests this frequently made a very great difference. There is also a down side to the new build, unfortunately. Yuzhikov says the program has been rewritten to use "freely available libraries", and because of this "performance is several times slower than our internal version". He hopes to improve this in future, but in the meantime, imported images will by default be resized to 1,000 pixels on their largest side (although it you're the patient type, you can still increase the limit via SmartDeblur's settings).

It's the first law of computing: every PC slows down over time. There are many different factors behind this, however, and so figuring out how best to speed up your own system is no easy task.  Should you defrag your hard drive? Remove unwanted apps? Clean your Registry? Or something else entirely?  Install iolo System Mechanic 9.5 and you won't have to waste any more time worrying about this, because the program will handle everything for you. We left it to run a deep scan on a test system, and after 30 minutes or so (rather longer than the suggested 5-7 minutes) it delivered a detailed report telling us what the problems were. High on the list was 4.8GB of leftover files that the program said could safely be deleted. This surprised us, as other tools, like CCleaner, said the figure was more like 1.6GB. Inspecting the report in more detail revealed that System Mechanic had somehow found "4.03 GB of clutter in 1583 temporary Windows files".  Which files, exactly?  There was no way to tell, but we were reluctant to wipe them without knowing. Fortunately the program got much more specific elsewhere. System Mechanic 9.5 didn't just list our Windows startup programs and leave us to decide which ones could be removed, for instance. Instead it identified 3 startup programs that we could do without (all reasonable choices), and then offered to remove them at a click. The report also explained that two of our drives were more than 9% fragmented, and the Registry was even worse, with 11% fragmentation and 2,091 errors.  And as a bonus, System Mechanic 9.5 also offered to optimise our Internet connection, and fix 13 vulnerable security settings. There's plenty of data on offer here, then, but if you're a PC novice, or simply in a hurry, then there's no need to waste time on the technical details. Just check a box, click the Repair All button and System Mechanic will go to work, fixing everything on its list. And after that, System Mechanic's ActiveCare feature takes over, automatically fixing Registry, hard drive and other problems while your PC is idle, so it's always running at peak performance. System Mechanic's functions don't stop there, though: iolo have crammed in many other tools that you might find useful. EnergyBooster closes down memory-hogging programs and processes just temporarily, for instance, freeing up RAM for games and other resource-hungry apps. The Incinerator securely wipes files so they can't be deleted. And Privacy Cleaner clears the tracks left by Windows, browsers, media players and more. This is a comprehensive suite, then, that comes packed with useful maintenance tools. Some of them don't provide as much information on what they're doing as we'd like, and that makes us nervous: if we're told it's safe to delete 4GB of data, then we'd like the opportunity to verify that.  Other cleanup tools are as good as you'll find anywhere, though, and so if you're willing to explore the program, find out what works for you, then System Mechanic definitely deserves a place in your maintenance toolkit.

Twitter has updated its desktop and web app, TweetDeck 2.1.0. The multi-columned Twitter client gains four notable improvements with this new release, including search, lists, expanded Tweets and keyboard shortcuts. At the present time, the updates apply only to the Windows version of the desktop client – the Mac build remains at version 2.0.3. However, these changes have also been implemented in its Google Chrome web app as well as the Tweetdeck.com website itself. From version 2.1, users can now edit existing search columns as new columns are added, removing the need to continually add new search columns while refining a search column to include the information they want to read. The feature is accessible by clicking the new magnifying glass icon to the top right of the search column to expand the column’s options and change search terms. You can now edit searches without having to create new columns. Accessing lists has also been made easier – now it’s possible to open a list directly simply by typing its name into the Search box. These include third-party lists and unsubscribed lists – if the list’s owner is known, simply type @username/listname into the Search box to access it, a far better approach than the previous method, whereby lists had to be manually accessed via another user’s profile panel. Furthermore, users can browse lists, preview their content and then click Add column to add selected users to their own column in TweetDeck. Expanded Tweets are also enhanced in TweetDeck 2.1, with support for Photo and Player cards in the Tweet details view, a move that brings support for more than 2,000 websites to TweetDeck’s columns. The update is rounded off with the implementation of TweetDeck’s first keyboard shortcuts since version 2.0 was released. The feature is still heavily limited, with just three shortcuts supported at present, namely [N] to open the Tweet compose window, [Ctrl] + [Enter] to send the Tweet, and [Esc] to close all pop-up windows, including the Tweet compose window. Those disappointed with such a limited selection will be mollified to learn that Twitter has promised more extensive shortcuts in future update. TweetDeck 2.1.0 is available now as a free download for Windows PCs and Google Chrome users via its web app.

Foxit Software has updated its free PDF reader tool, Foxit Reader to version 5.1. This new release adds tools for sharing content from PDF files with Facebook and Twitter, and adds a Read Out Loud feature that uses speech synthesis to read any text embedded into the current PDF file. Version 5.1 also introduces a new Reading Mode that helps to maximise the reading area via options that help to provide a full-screen view of the current document. The program can be updated through its own updater or downloaded separately and installed over the top of the existing verson. Foxit Reader 5.1’s new social networking integration feature is accessed via the Facebook icon on the toolbar or by clicking the Share button on the Basic tab when using the program’s tabbed ribbon interface. This opens a panel on the right-hand side of the screen inviting the user to link the program to their Twitter and Facebook accounts. Once done, the user can share files, images or text via their social network of choice. Files and images can be selected from the computer’s hard drive, or the user can opt to share the currently selected PDF by right-clicking it and choosing Share Current Document. The user can also use Foxit’s screen grabbing tool to select a portion of the document and share that as an attached image – this time, select the portion of the screen to share before right-clicking it to select Share the selected image. Version 5.1 also implements a new tool that can read out the embedded text in a PDF file via the View menu via a female, computerised voice. Playback can be paused from the same menu, and the user can opt to read out the current page or the entire document. Foxit Reader 5.1’s new Reading Mode, which can be enabled by default for PDF files opened directly in the browser, features a number of options for removing parts of the program interface – specifically toolbars and ribbon elements – to maximise the screen space for the current PDF file. This is provided via a Read Mode button in the top right-hand corner of the window, which hides all toolbars plus collapses the ribbon-like interface so only the tabbed headings are visible. Readability is also improved through enhanced text rendering, which Foxit promises makes text clearer and more sharply defined. Other changes include improved startup and PDF opening and closing times, plus Foxit Reader now automatically chooses paper size when printing, based on the PDF’s own page size. Foxit Reader 5.1 is a freeware download for PCs running Windows 2000 or later.

Yahoo! Messenger 11 has finally left beta after seven months and been given a final release by Yahoo! Version 11 sees a number of new features, including support for Facebook, Twitter and other social media networks. The use of instant messaging programs has declined somewhat due to the growth of social media platforms with larger networks. Yahoo! has chosen to embrace this trend by placing social media at the heart of Yahoo! Messenger 11. Not only is it designed to strike up conversations via text or audio/video, but now you can also play collaborative games and interact across your Facebook network too. It’s now possible to update your Facebook status directly from Yahoo! Messenger 11 as well as take part in social games like Mafia Wars without leaving the program. With more and more people using multiple internet-connected devices like smartphones, netbooks and tablets in addition to their computers, Yahoo! Messenger is designed to let you stay signed in simultaneously in several places, ensuring no updates are missed and your availability isn’t compromised. In addition to Facebook, Yahoo! Messenger 11 also allows you to not only view updates from friends on Twitter, Flickr and Pulse, but “like” and comment on them from directly within the program too. You can also save time by posting single updates across all of your networks. Other improvements include easy access to your recent conversations from any PC that you’ve used when signed into Yahoo! Messenger. Browse the latest discussions and pull up a full transcript. If you like to customise your apps, there are seven brand new skins for you to apply. Yahoo! Messenger 11 is available as a free download for PCs running Windows XP or later. There’s a web-based version at http://webmessenger.yahoo.com for other platforms as well as dedicated apps for iPhone and Android too.

Lee Whittington has released version 2 of his Services-tweaking utility, SMART Windows Services Tweaker. SMART – an acronym for Services Management And Realeasy Tweaking – offers a number of preset options for tweaking Windows Services to boost both startup time and overall performance. Version 2.0 features a redesigned interface, a new custom settings option, plus the ability to find out more about selected Services via a Microsoft Bing web search or by visiting the relevant page on the BlackViper website, which is used by SMART to determine the settings for each of the three available preset options. Windows Services are background programs loaded at startup. They consume their fair share of resources, and like most aspects of Windows, are configured for maximum compatibility rather than performance. Services can be managed via the Services management console – type services.msc into the Run dialogue box – but it can be difficult knowing what each Service represents and if it’s safe to disable or switch to manual. The Black Viper website provides detailed information about each and every system Service running on PCs, and also includes a series of recommended settings based on how far the end user wishes to push their system performance in relation to stability and compatibility. While it’s possible to tweak individual Services manually using the Services console and following the advice on the Black Viper website, it’s a fiddly and time-consuming process. SMART simplifies the process by offering three preset settings based on Black Viper’s own recommendations: Safe, Moderate and Advanced. The program creates a Restore point before making any changes,  plus there is a Defaults button to restore the system to its original state should the tweaks prove more harmful than beneficial. Version 2 has redesigned the interface, plus tweaked how Services are configured or viewed – double-click to view more details about an individual Service (complete with links to a Bing search or Black Viper), or right-click to configure individual services manually. Custom settings can then be saved for future use, allowing the user to quickly and easily switch between different configurations. It’s not recommended for novices, but so long as you’ve created a System Restore point or even taken a drive image of your hard drive, you should find even dipping your toe into the water by selecting the Safe option will provide a moderate – but noticeable – speed boost without any side effects. SMART 2.0 requires Windows XP or later, and is free for personal and non-commercial use.

We were expecting it to be out at the end of October, but the wait is now over: Apple has just released iTunes 11 for Windows and Mac. And it's not difficult to imagine why there might have been some delays, because this is a significant upgrade. A revamped interface makes it easier to view your library by songs, albums, artists, videos and more, for instance. And if you click an album, say, it now expands in place, so you can see the track listing and start playing something without ever moving away from the library view. This new approach means you could quickly have a queue of tracks waiting to be played, of course. The new Up Next feature helps you keep control, though, displaying the tracks you've set up so far, and allowing you to delete items (or add others) as you like. And creating full playlists is now also improved, requiring little more than a few drag and drops. The new-look interface expands your album track listing within the regular library view Elsewhere, the MiniPlayer has been revamped with many new features. The Up Next list is included here, too, and you can now find and add new tracks without ever having to open the full library. If you'd like to find new music, then the new "In the Store" button will help, showing you items related to whatever you're viewing currently (though not in an intrusive way, you won't get this unless you go looking for it). The store itself now has a more unified look, so it'll feel the same whether you're using your tablet, phone or desktop. And if you're a cross-platform user then you'll also appreciate that iCloud now remembers where you are, so if you pause a movie or podcast on one device, then you can start it on another and carry on exactly where you left off. Put it all together and iTunes 11 has plenty to explore. If you have a previous version installed then the program should detect the new release already (Help > Check for Updates, if not), otherwise you can download the new release now.

Ahead of the imminent release of iOS 4.2, Apple has released iTunes 10.1 which features supported for the updated mobile operating system. In addition to the usual collection of bug fixes and performance and stability improvements, the latest version of iTunes includes the option to completely disable the Ping feature. Another Ping related update sees the addition of Twitter support from Ping. This means that users are now able to tweet from Ping indicating a like or dislike for a particle song or artist - anyone reading your tweet can click on an automatically generated link to find out more about the track or album in question. One of the biggest new features to be found in iOS 4.2 is the ability to stream content to mobile devices via AirPlay. iTunes 10.1 includes support for AirPlay meaning that it will be possible to stream music or video from your iTunes library to your Apple TV or a set of speakers. iTunes 10.1 is available for both Mac and Windows. Find out more and download the software by paying a visit to the program web page.

Skype has updated Skype for Android, its voice, video and instant messaging client, to version 2.0. The major new feature in version 2.0 is support for video-conferencing through your Android phone or tablet using 3G or Wi-Fi. At the present time, video conferencing is limited to users of specific handhelds running Android 2.3, including HTC Desire S, Sony Ericsson Xperia neo, Sony Ericsson Xperia pro and the Google Nexus S. Support for other handsets is promised in future updates. Version 2.0 also sees support for sending SMS messages to other users, plus a complete interface redesign, with a new main menu making it easy to navigate contacts, check profile and balance and make calls. There’s also a new mood message box for updating your Skype status. Skype also recently announced it has submitted a dedicated Skype for iPad application, which is currently going through the Apple approval process before it becomes available to iPad users through the App Store. The application is designed to make the most of the extra power, resolution and features on the iPad, although the lack of a camera on the original iPad means only iPad 2 users will be able to broadcast as well as receive video. At the present time, iPad users can use the Skype for iPhone app instead. Skype has also announced a major change to its community site, which is now being integrated into a new Support Network platform. Currently in beta, the site is available for access by clicking here. Skype 2.0 for Android is available as a free download for supported Android tablets and phones running Android 2.3 with a front-facing camera. Skype is also available as a desktop application for Windows, Mac and Linux, as well as for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

iOS app Flipboard has already earned itself something of a name as a great way to aggregate multiple social networks and news media into a single, more easily managed stream. The latest version of the iPhone and iPad app sees the introduction of support for audio as well as the more usual text and image based content. There is support for SoundCloud, NPR (National Public Radio) and PRI (Public Radio International)which gives you the opportunity to listen to a wide variety of podcasts,  radio broadcasts and more. By connecting Flipboard with SoundCloud you can listen to sounds that have been created or shared by your friends. There is a whole new audio category for you to explore and this interesting change in direction for the social networking tool. Flipboard Just as with anything else you consume through Flipboard, the sounds you encounter through the app can be shared through the likes of Facebook, Twitter and other services. Just where the audio addition will lead remains to be seen. There is almost undoubtedly be online radio stations that are designed specifically for a Fliboard audience, and it won’t be long before artist start to use the app as a medium for collaborative or crowd-sourced work. The future looks and sounds exciting. The latest update also improves accessibility options, and it is now possible to use the VoiceOver feature of iOS to listen to articles rather than having to read them. There is also a new fully localized Japanese version of the app as well as support for Readability. This last addition supplements the existing support for Instapaper and provides users with another option for time-shifting their reading. You can find out more and download a free copy of the app at the Flipboard review page.

Nitro PDF has updated its free PDF reader and creator, Nitro Reader, to version 2.3. The latest version, which is also available as a 64-bit app promises improved performance through reduced memory usage, plus revamps its QuickSign signature tool and adds a smattering of new features in addition to various bug fixes. Nitro Reader has carved itself a niche in the PDF reader market by providing a feature-rich application that includes powerful PDF creation tools as well as viewing ones, all without delivering ads or nags to upgrade to a paid-for version. Version 2.3 aims to maintain its lead in the feature stakes while significantly cutting back on its system demands. Nitro Reader’s Achilles heel has always been its memory demands. With version 2.3, these have been cut back thanks to tweaks made to the program’s PDF rendering engine, which was significantly overhauled for the 2.0 release last June. Now the engine is capable of rendering PDF files more quickly than before while consuming less system RAM, freeing up resources for other applications. Nitro Reader is an all-in-one PDF reader, creator and basic editor Nitro Reader 2.3 introduces one other significant improvement, a much improved QuickSign tool. QuickSign is designed to allow users to quickly import digital signatures for stamping on PDF documents, and Nitro Reader 2.3 delivers a number of improvements to speed up the process further. First, imported images are handled much better: transparencies are preserved in PNG files, and the signature is automatically converted to black and white. It’s also dynamically and intelligently resized to fit the document when stamped on the page, further saving time and hassle. Other changes are minor: users can now zoom into and out of documents via the mouse’s scroll wheel while holding the [Ctrl] button, and a number of bugs and crashes have been resolved, resulting in improved rendering of fonts and previews. The new release marks a shift to a new rapid-release cycle, with future updates expected to follow every six to eight weeks. Nitro Reader 2.3 32-bit and Nitro Reader 2.3 64-bit are free downloads for PCs running Windows XP or later.

Blocking malware before it manages to infect your PC is relatively easy. Your antivirus package scans the file, email attachment or whatever it might be, recognises the threat, and deletes it before any damage can be done: simple. Should the malware bypass your protection, though, and manage to install itself, then it's a very different story. Now the threat may be able to hide from your security software, prevent you running particular programs, reaching certain sites - and that can make removing it a very real challenge. Unless you've a copy of RKill on hand to help. The program is small, simple and straightforward, and has one major purpose: to terminate any malware processes, so they'll no longer be able to interfere with your security software. Temporarily, anyway. As RKill doesn't remove the malware, even if it does manage to kill everything in memory, if you reboot the virus will just take control again. There are no settings to figure out, or options to consider - just run RKill and watch it work Still, the program can be very helpful in certain circumstances. If your PC has been infected by malware, and that's stopping you from accessing or properly using security software, then running RKill may be able to delete any malicious processes. And then you can try running a deep scan with your existing antivirus package, or perhaps using some other tool to try and detect and remove the threat (Malwarebytes Chameleon is a great tool for these situations, as we discussed earlier this month). And there's no doubt RKill is easy to use. There's no configuration, no options to consider, not even any interface, really - just launch the executable, and watch as a console window shows you what it's doing (then a text report gives you a little more detail). For all this, you should be careful about how and when you use the program, because it can cause problems in itself. In our tests we found RKill would regularly kill processes which weren't malicious at all, for instance. Most of the time this shouldn't cause any critical problems, because it's not touching the application files, so even if your system crashes then you can always just reboot. But it's hard to say precisely what will happen, so we'd still recommend you save any work and close all open programs before you give RKill a try. As long as you keep this in mind, though, RKill could prove a very useful tool of last resort. And it's probably a good idea to add a copy to your portable security toolkit, just so you're prepared for any malware emergencies.

Paragon Software Group has revealed the latest update for Paragon Hard Disk Manager 12 Professional and Suite, its do-everything hard drive management toolkit. And although the new build is more about extending compatibility with various technologies than adding any entirely new features, there are still enough tweaks and enhancements for this to qualify as a major upgrade. Improved GPT/ UEFI handling means the program should now be able to clone, migrate or restore a 64-bit Windows configuration which is using a UEFI-based boot, for instance. Hard Disk Manager's straightforward interface is mostly unaffected by this latest upgrade If your UEFI-based system has multiple volumes and several installed operating systems, the updated Boot Corrector now allows you to choose which one you'd like to use. And Paragon's Boot Media Builder can now create a 64-bit UEFI-compatible boot volume, which you're able to save to DVD, a USB flash drive, or ISO image. Elsewhere, Paragon claims that this release is now fully Windows 8-compatible. And they don't just mean "runs without crashing" (although of course that's a very good start). Hard Disk Manager 12 now fully supports the new Windows 8 Storage Spaces feature, so is able to carry out all its usual maintenance and configuration options on Storage Spaces volumes, in exactly the same way as you would on any other drive. And, slightly more cryptically, Paragon says the new build also includes "enhanced physical-to-physical and physical-to-virtual functionality". We're currently unsure what this means, though (and the lack of detail suggests that it's not going to be anything too impressive). Revision 3 doesn't materially affect Paragon Hard Disk Manager 12 Professional and Suite's core features, then, but it's still a welcome upgrade, and updates and trial builds are available now.

Utilities developer BlueSprig has released the first full version of JetBoost, its free PC speedup tool, which aims to optimise system performance by temporarily closing down unnecessary processes. And while this kind of application can get a little complicated, JetBoost's emphasis is on simplicity, with the program doing its job in just a click or two (although if you'd like to take control, then you can get more involved in exactly how JetBoost works). At its most basic, then, you can use the program just by choosing whether you'd like to optimise your system for a work-related application, or a game, before clicking the "Start to boost" button. JetBoost will then close down surplus Windows services, clear the clipboard, activate the High Performance power plan and apply a few other tricks to free up system resources. You can run your game (or whatever) to take advantage of this, clicking the "Stop" button when you're done to restore all your services and settings and carry on where you left off. This kind of Windows service tuning generally won't deliver major benefits; our test system saw an increase in free RAM of around 50MB, for instance. Still, our PC was already fairly well optimised, so you may see better results in some cases. And other options used here, like turning on the High Performance power plan, can help to make a very real difference. If you'd like to free up even more resources, though, you can always switch JetBoost to "Custom" mode. And then you're able to choose running processes and third-party services which you'd also like to be temporarily closed whenever you click the Boost button. You need to be careful here, of course, as closing something important could cause all kinds of PC problems. But choose wisely and JetBoost will be able to free up many more system resources, so delivering a more significant speed boost for the programs which really need it.

The clue is in the title: Acronis Backup and Security is actually a compilation of two separate products: there's TrueImage Home 2011 with Acronis Online Backup for backups, and Acronis Internet Security 2011 offering protection for your computer. All three are wrapped up in an integrated installer, but ultimately you're buying two unconnected products. The cost of buying both together in this compilation is significantly less than purchasing either independently, making them a competitively priced option for those needing both backup software and a decent security option. Back up your computer The star of this package is undoubtedly Acronis TrueImage Home 2011. It's one of the best backup tools there is, and has long since developed beyond being simply a capable drive-imaging tool. There are options for backing up files and email, plus tools for providing continuous backups and a protected environment for testing applications before deciding if you wish to keep them or not. The online backup tool – which although a separate product is accessible from the TrueImage interface – comes with 5GB complementary online storage space. If that's insufficient, there's also an option to upgrade to 250GB for an additional $20 per year, an extremely competitive premium when compared to dedicated online backup services. Take an image Launch TrueImage for the first time and you’ll be presented with a splash screen offering three options: back up my critical data, use the backup assistant, and go to the main program. The first option simply provides three options for backing up: system partition, documents and other personal data, and the choice of backup destination. Click Backup Now, and you’re off and running. The second option allows you to choose between backing up your system drive using the imaging tool, selected files or folders or your email. The final option lets you access any of the tools – including the more advanced features like Try & Decide – and is worth exploring should you want a greater degree of control over what is backed up. Everything is designed to be as simple and as understandable as possible, and with options like Nonstop Backup, your backups will be updated almost continuously, giving you access to the latest version of your data and system whatever happens. This latter option is a little restrictive, making it difficult to locate older versions of files, so more advanced users will probably trade in the higher level of protection for the greater flexibility offered by the main tools. Effortless rollback TrueImage boasts a handy feature called Try&Decide. Switch this on, and you're able to effectively enter “sandbox” mode, allowing you to perform actions that can be rolled back effortlessly should you run into problems. It’s of most use when testing software, performing sensitive tasks or opening your computer up to potential security breaches. Once the experiment is complete, decide to accept or reject the changes – choosing the latter reverts your PC back to its previous state, and unlike System Restore everything is rolled back, not just system and program files, so use with care (or keep your data stored on another partition). Try&Decide is a useful tool, but quite slow when implementing changes, and when it's enabled other drive-imaging tools (including the continuous protection feature) are disabled, which detract from it slightly. New features There’s not an awful lot new in the 2011 version to recommend it to those using the 2010 version. The most notable new feature is better integration with Windows 7 – including automatically backing up the contents of your Libraries – along with the ability to convert TrueImage backups into standard Windows backups and vice versa for compatibility purposes. But for those looking for their first all-in-one backup solution, it offers the best blend of usability and features currently available on the market. Stay protected Acronis Internet Security 2011 is actually a rebadged version of BitDefender Internet Security 2011. That’s not in itself a bad thing – BitDefender does have a reasonable track record after all, but it means the protection offered is good rather than great. Its main strengths lie in the privacy side of things, with excellent anti-phishing protection, but this is countered by slightly disappointing results when dealing with malware – either in terms of blocking it, or removing infections already present. The 2011 version is more streamlined than its predecessor, which means it’s faster and lighter on system resources, so installing it won’t bring your computer grinding to a halt. It can be used in a set-it-and-forget-it capacity, or you can dig a little deeper to take advantage of advanced tools and options. These include parental controls, a gaming mode that reduces the program’s footprint further and disables intensive operations such as scanning when switched on, and a file vault. This latter option allows you to create an encrypted container on your PC that’s mounted like a real drive, allowing you to store sensitive files securely, protecting them from falling into the wrong hands. Competent, but unspectacular Acronis Internet Security 2011 falls into the middle of the pack when it comes to PC protection, excelling in some areas, but lacking in others. If you’re the kind of person who is still plagued by malware then choose a package like Norton 2011 instead, but if privacy concerns – particularly when it comes to being scammed or phished – are paramount, this is the tool of choice. At $69.99, Acronis Backup and Security 2011 doesn’t look particularly cheap, particularly when it only pays for a single year’s protection and online backup, but it's still far better value than marrying TrueImage with any other security product. Also, the licence can be used on up to three PCs in the home, which obviously adds to its value. Your money will buy you a top-notch backup tool and decent, if not earth-shattering, security. It adds up to being a good choice for those who understand the importance of both forms of protection, but who want simple solutions that won't demand time or attention to set up.

Avast! has released a major update for its anti-virus tool and internet security suite, delivering a host of improvements to most of the program’s major components, including its Behaviour Shield and anti-rootkit engine. Avast! 5.1 builds on the previous version 5 release, which appeared last year. Version 5 introduced a new user interface, full compatibility with Windows 7, improved performance (particularly with multi-core processors) and a new gaming mode, which detects full-screen applications and disables popups and other on-screen notifications without compromising security. Other improvements included a new heuristics engine, code emulator, behaviour shield and intelligent scanner. The latest release – version 5.1.864 – sees the Behaviour Shield tweaked to deliver “big improvements”, while other non-defined improvements have been made to the anti-rootkit engine, cleaning module and Web Shield. There have also been “minor” improvements made to the user interface and firewall, while support has been added for sound packs. The update will be delivered automatically to existing Avast! users, who will be required to reboot when it's complete. Some users have reported poor performance on 64-bit PCs after the update has been applied automatically in the program itself – uninstalling then reinstalling the new version should resolve this problem. Avast! 5.1 Free, Avast! 5.1 Pro and Avast! Internet Security 5.1 are available now for Windows 2000, XP, Vista and 7 users.

Piriform has released CCleaner 3.27, a minor update for its popular Windows free cleaning tool. CCleaner 3.27, also available in portable form, basically adds updates for major new browser releases, including support for Internet Explorer Metro in Windows 8. The release is joined by Speccy 1.20, a minor update of Piriform’s system information tool, which adds version number detection for a number of major apps. The key improvements in CCleaner 3.27 are aimed at improving support for Windows 8 users. Version 3.27 adds support for cleaning both the cache and history in Internet Explorer Metro, the full-screen app found in the Windows 8 Modern UI. CCleaner continues to improve its support for Windows 8. The update also adds support for the latest stable build of Google Chrome – v24 – and improves compatibility with Firefox 17 and newer builds, including the latest stable release. Other enhancements include better compatibility with Google Chrome extensions, improved Unicode text support and a new Burmese translation. The update is rounded off with the usual GUI tweaks and bug fixes. The update follows hot on the heels of the release of Speccy 1.20.446, which adds a number of new features, including the ability to detect the versions of Internet Explorer, Java and Windows PowerShell. Speccy 1.20 also claims better detection of SSD and larger hard drives, plus improved anti-virus detection of server OSes. Both CCleaner 3.27 and CCleaner 3.27 Portable, plus Speccy 1.20.446 and Speccy 1.20.446 Portable, are available now as freeware downloads for PCs running Windows XP or later.

The development of Opera continues apace and for anyone wanting to try out the very latest features of the browser have a new version to install. The latest build of Wahoo (the codename for Opera 12) is available for the first time as a 64-bit release for both Mac and Windows users and the latest snaps shot also features improved support for HTML 5 and CSS3. As with previous builds of Opera 12, it is possible to install this alongside your current stable version of the browser so you can try it out while maintaining the version you have become used to. The move to a 64-bit version has been made possible due to a change in the way plugins are handled. Plugins are now run in a separate process to the browser itself – known as OOPP or Out of Process Plugins – which also not only help to improve overall stability, but the security of Opera as well. The move to OOPP also means that it is possible to run 32-bit plugins in a 64-bit browser and Mac users will find that there is now a universal binary available that includes both 32- and 64-but versions rather than making them available separately. The two other major points of interest are the improved support for HTML5 and CSS3. This particular build sees support for HTML5 drag and drop, and while this is still something of an emerging standard, it’s god to see that work is taking place to ensure the best level of support possible. On the CSS3 front, there is now experimental support for CSS animations as well as updated support for transitions. At the heart of the browser there is a new Presto core which gives the rendering engine a complete overhaul. If you’ve yet to try out some of the more experimental versions of web browsers that are being released, this is an excellent opportunity to do so. Despite the fact that it is still fairly early days for Opera 12, things are already shaping up well. For a full list of changes in this release, head on over to the Opera Desktop Team blog and the Opera Developer News blog. You can find out more and download a free copy of the program by paying a visit to the Opera 12 review page.

iOS 5 may have only just been released, but Apple wasted no time whatsoever in releasing apps that have been designed with the new version of the operating system in mind. First off the starting blocks is Find My Friends which, as the name suggests, makes it possible for a group of friends to share their location with each other with a view to meeting up - or just tracking where everyone is. You can adjust privacy settings so that your location is only shared when you want and with the people you are happy to share with. Should you decide you want to discover where your friends are - if you need to meet them in an new town, for example - you can send a request from within the app and, assuming that consent, their location will be displayed on a map for you. Find My Friends can also provide you with directions so you can meet up as quickly as possible. Apple's second iOS 5 release is AirPort Utility which is essentially an iOS port of its Mac utility. The app can be used to adjust the settings of your wireless base station from the comfort of your iPad or iPhone. This includes basic options such as restarting your AirPort and viewing a network maps of currently connected devices. There are also more advanced options such as the ability to update firmware away from your Mac or PC as well as adjusting port forwarding and IP address settings. For quick network fixes from the sofa, this is a great tool but there is a fairly limited range of hardware that it is compatible with. You can find out more and download a free copy of the app by paying a visit to the AirPort Utility review page. If you're more interested in hooking up with your nearest and dearest, pay a visit to the Find My Friends review page.

It has been another busy week for software releases, and the chances are that something may have escaped your attention over the past seven days. But fear not, we have collected together some of the highlights of the week in a handy roundup so you can get up to speed. VMWare released a series of updates to it virtualization software, starting with VMware Workstation 8.0.1. The app can be used to run virtual copies of Windows and Linux and the latest version includes graphic performance improvements as well as support for Ubuntu 11. VMware Player 4.0.1 is the free version of the virtualization tool for Windows while VMware Fusion 4.1 is more a major upgrade for Mac users which allows for full screen mode in Lion, improved performance of virtual machines and much more. But you may well be more interested in looking after your standard copy of Windows rather than a virtual one, and this is where IObit Advanced SystemCare 5 FINAL can help. The updated system optimization tool includes real-time optimization in the form of ActiveBoost while the re-written program uses fewer resources. Sticking to the system utility theme, Quick Erase 0.4 makes it possible to quickly and easily erase files you would rather were not seen by anyone else – for whatever reason. There are twelve secure deletion options to choose from, helping to ensure that the files you delete stay deleted. If you are more interested in ensuring that your files are backed up rather than deleted, BurnAware Free 4.2 may be right up your street. This free CD, DVD and Blu-ray burning tool can be used to backing up data, burning ISO images and creating audio discs. Also on the creative front, Microsoft Expression Encoder 4.0 SP1 can be used to capture video from a variety of sources, before editing it and converting it for viewing on a range of devices including online broadcasts. This is an example of a program that can be made as simple or as complex as you like, and while it is possible to get results fairly quickly, there are plenty of options here for anyone who wants to get a little more involved. Skype for Windows 5.7 Beta and Skype for Mac 5.4 Beta both received updates this week, adding the ability to conduct video chats with your Facebook contacts amongst other enhancements. The group chat options of Skype mean that it is an ideal tool for conducting online meetings, but whether you are conducting on- or offline meetings, PointerStick 1.0 could prove to be a valuable tool. This free utility provides you with a large onscreen pointer that can be used to draw attention to thing you want to demonstrate. Waterfox 8 This is been a quieter week for browser updates, but Waterfox 8.0 has been released. This is a browser for users of 64-bit Windows who can’t wait for the 64-bit version of Firefox as it is based on Firefox code and is virtually indistinguishable from the more common 32-bit version of Mozilla’s browser. The internet can be used for business and pleasure, and when used for entertainment, Game Downloader 2.5 can point you in the direction of dozens of downloadable games. We’ve already mentioned one disc burning tool, but Hamster Free Burning Studio 1.0.9.9 is also worth a mention if only for its pleasingly customizable interface. On the subject of eye-candy, Horloger 1.0 FINAL is an attractive desktop clock for Windows users that will appear familiar to HTC Sense users – good-looking and functional. For music fans Apple iTunes 10.5.1 (32-bit) and  Apple iTunes 10.5.1 (64-bit) were both updated, adding support for iTunes Match in the United States. If video is more your thing, Freemake Video Downloader 3.0.0 makes it possible to download streaming video from an extensive list of supported sites, while a blast from the past RealPlayer 15 adds the ability to track your friends’ Facebook videos. Whatever type of software you are looking for, there’s something here from the past week for everyone.

When creating a website you'll almost certainly want to keep file sizes to a minimum, reducing load times and bandwidth usage. So it's a shame that some WYWIWYG editors don't understand this at all, routinely producing bloated code which will inevitably slow you down. Still, don't worry - help is at hand from the free HTML Cleaner. Initially, at least, the program works more or less as you might expect. You can open a single HTML file, or an entire folder; click a button and everything you've chosen will be optimised (we typically saved 9-10% immediately); and you can then view the results to confirm that the code works exactly as it did. What surprised us, though, was just how many optimisations were on offer here. HTML Cleaner doesn't just do the obvious, removing surplus spaces, unnecessary quotation marks, HTML comments, excess carriage return/ line feed sequences, and so on - the program also works at the tag level. Is the target page using unnecessary closing tags, for instance? HTML Cleaner will search for and delete any that you don't need (THEAD and TBODY, say). Every aspect of HTML Cleaner can be tweaked from its settings dialogs Has your WYSIWYG editor generated an empty tag for some reason? They'll go, too. Maybe your page is using long tags where there are shorter sort-of equivalents? HTML Cleaner will search out tags and replace them with , for instance - and the list goes on. We're not entirely happy with all of this. Some will want to keep closing tags for structure reasons, say, and others won't approve of all the tag substitutions HTML Cleaner makes ( for , for instance). But that doesn't matter, as the program is very configurable. If you're not happy with a global function, for instance, such as "Remove HTML comments", then you can generally turn it off with a click. And other options can be tweaked at the tag level. The "Replace tags" feature uses a default set of rules which looks like "ADDRESS=I;BLOCKQUOTE=UL;CITE=I;CODE=TT;EM=I;KBD=TT;SAMP=TT;STRIKE=S;STRONG=B;VAR=I", for example. If you're not happy with one or more of those then you can delete it, and of course you're free to add other rules of your own. Of course this may not be an entirely straightforward process, and so HTML Cleaner probably isn't the best choice for HTML beginners. If you understand what the program is doing and have the time to configure it properly, though, it does provide a fairly quick and easy way to trim your HTML documents down to a more manageable size.

Every DVD and Blu-ray disc comes with its own bundled movie player, so at first glance you might not see why you'd want to buy another one in the shape of CyberLink PowerDVD 10 Ultra Mark II. Take a closer look, though, and you may well change your mind, because it's a very impressive package. The program handles Blu-ray very well, for instance, with support for BD-Live, HDMI Audio and just about every Dolby standard there is (Digital Plus, Digital EX, TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, 5.1, Logic IIx and more). Excellent DVD upscaling ensures your older movies will look great, too. And a range of TrueTheater processing options work to improve picture quality wherever it can. Just as in PowerDVD 9, there are options to increase your frame rate (from 24 fps up to 60 fps), and dynamically tweak the brightness, contrast and colour to produce better results. And new to this version are TrueTheater Noise Reduction, an effective filter for removing video noise in your home movies, and TrueTheater Stabilizer, which compensates for shaky camera work. We found these all produced generally good results; just occasionally, with tricky source material, colours would appear a little washed out or overexposed, but if you do have problems then it's easy to turn these optimisations off. And if you're a fan of Windows Media Center, don't worry, you won't necessarily have to choose between them. PowerDVD 10 Ultra integrates with Media Center, so you can use its powerful technologies to improve disc playback while keeping the MCE interface, arguably offering you the best of both worlds. 2D to 3D One of the major additions to the high-end versions of PowerDVD 10 (Deluxe and Ultra) comes in the new TrueTheater 3D, which will convert regular 2D DVD to 3D in real time. The feature is controlled through a new 3D button on the toolbar. Click this, choose your 3D display (NVIDIA 3D Vision, row-interleaved or 3D Ready HDTV), then drag a slider to set your required "3D scene depth". The 3D effect adjusts dynamically, so it's easy to choose the best setting, then just click OK, sit back and enjoy. Well, mostly. The results can look a little layered and artificial, hardly surprising considering the difficulty of what TrueTheater 3D is trying to do, and if you're watching something like "An Education" then you'll probably find they get in the way. If you just want to spend a fun hour or two with some friends, watching an explosion of effects like "2012″, though, the added depth can add plenty of extra entertainment. And it's practical to use, too, even on lesser PCs. We tried it out on a system with a basic 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo E4500. Typical CPU usage during full-screen DVD playback was around 30%; enabling the most resource-hungry 3D Ready HDTV mode pushed this up to about 40%, but playback otherwise continued as normal, with no stuttering or interruptions. 3D Blu-ray support For the best 3D experience, though, you'll want to make good use of PowerDVD 10 Ultra Mark II's Blu-ray support. The program's support for a range of different acceleration technologies (AMD Quad-Buffer, MVC software decoding, IGP accelerated decode, and more) helps ensure smooth playback. And it will apply other tricks, where necessary, for example turning off Windows Aero to optimise performance (though you can tell PowerDVD not to do this, if it proves inconvenient). New in the PowerDVD 10 Ultra Mark II edition, released July 2010, is the ability to handle the new Blu-ray 3D standard (Profile 5.0). PowerDVD was in fact the first Blu-ray 3D player to be certified for this by the Blu-ray disc association, so you can be sure that it's able to handle every aspect of your discs, from the full high definition video and audio, to the 3D menus, subtitles, and BD-J (Blu-ray Java) interactivity. Of course you will need a compatible HDCP-compliant 3D display, and 3D glasses. Right now 3D Ready HDTV, Micro-polarizer LCD or Anaglyph Red/Cyan glasses are supported. PowerDVD 10 Ultra will work with NVIDIA 3D Vision, too, but only on Windows 7, unfortunately - it's not supported on XP or Vista. Aside from the 3D kit, though, PowerDVD 10 Ultra is relatively undemanding, and should work well on even basic hardware. A Core 2 Duo E6750 (2.66GHz) or AMD Phenom 9450 (2.10GHz) ought to provide sufficient processing power, and as long as your graphics card is an Intel G45, ATI Radeon HD2400, NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT or above, then you should see the high quality playback you expect. (Still not sure?  Check here for the official system requirements.) Media Player PowerDVD 10 Ultra isn't just for playing DVDs and Blu-ray discs, of course. The program has always been able to play some video files, and can handle all the main HD formats: AVCHD, AVCREC, MPEG-4 AVC (H.264), MPEG-2 HD and WMV-HD. This version extends the list with support for viewing DivX, MKV (H.264), FLV (H.264) and mobile phone video formats, though (3gp, 3g2). It's possible to play RM/RMVB files if RealPlayer is installed, and there's now support for playing back subtitle files in all the main formats (SMI, ASS, SSA, PSB, SRT and SUB). Useful? You bet, and that's just the start. PowerDVD 10 Ultra sees the program gain many other useful features to enhance its media player credentials. If you've come across a point in a video that you'd like to save, for instance, then you can now create a bookmark with a text description. Double-click this later to load and replay the video from that point. A social networking element lets you add bookmarks or comments to a DVD, then share them immediately on Facebook, Twitter and MoovieLive. If you've found a clip that's so good you'd like to share it with the world, then PowerDVD 10 Ultra can upload it to YouTube in a couple of clicks. And this Mark II release adds the ability to convert any video into 3D: just click the 3D button and add new depth to your movies. (Though as before, you'll need a 3D display and glasses to benefit from the results.) CyberLink are clearly positioning PowerDVD 10 Ultra as at least having the capabilities of a more general media player, then, and that's fine with us. The program is never going to compete on performance terms with lightweight media players like VLC, but then it's doing a lot more, and these latest features include many useful additions that will simplify and enhance your media-playing life.

CyberLink has released PowerProducer 6 Ultra, the latest version of its DVD authoring tool, and while the changes aren't revolutionary there's plenty to explore. The program now includes 14 animated 3D-like menu templates, for instance. Some aren't so great, but others are very good indeed, and on balance they're an excellent extension to the program's abilities. PowerProducer 6 has extended its file format support, too. The program can now directly import MKV and FLV videos, for instance, as well as a wide range of RAW image formats. PowerProducer's simple, clean interface focuses very much on ease of use New disc format support sees the program able to author AVCREC projects, as well as side-by-side 3D discs (although without a menu). A new and separate LabelPrint tool helps you design custom disc labels, covers and inlays (it's fairly basic with only a few templates, but worth having if you've nothing else to hand). Of course PowerProducer 6 Ultra is now fully compatible with Windows 8, too. And it's currently available for $75.99, with a 30-day trial version available if you're interested (keep in mind that any videos the trial version processes will have a watermark added). Too expensive? As previously, CyberLink has also released PowerProducer 6 Deluxe, a cut-down version of the same product. Essentially it's the same program, with Blu-ray and HD capabilities removed, only 5 (rather than 14) of the new animated menus, and no LabelPrint tool. But by way of compensation, it's only $44.99, perhaps a better deal if you can live with the restrictions.

There are plenty of ways to launch programs using hotkeys, and even Windows has one of its own (right-click a shortcut, select Properties > Shortcut and click the "Shortcut key" box), but remembering enough of these to cope with all your applications is extremely difficult. The open source MadAppLauncher takes a different approach, though, which is very much simpler. It uses a simple QWERTY-type layout, and allows you to assign one program to each key. The relevant application icon and name is displayed alongside the key letter, so if you press H, say, whatever is in the H box will be launched. You also get ten tabs, which correspond to the number keys, and each of these have their own QWERTY layout. This allows you to separate your programs into ten groups of up to 30 applications, for 300 in total. And if that's not enough, you can save your current layout with a descriptive name ("Internet", "Work", whatever fits) and then create and load as many others as you need. Every application "key" can be customised in much the same way as a regular Windows shortcut. You're able to set its name, icon, target, command line arguments, starting folder, window style (normal, hidden, minimised, maximised and so on). The QWERTY layout means there's no need to remember complicated hotkeys Unusually, you even get some control over the window size and position, so for instance you might decide to launch a program in the bottom half of the screen (assuming the application supports that, anyway). This doesn't always look good - the application may appear somewhere else, then move - but it does work. And there are all kinds of options here. You can move an application from one key to another; keep MadAppLauncher on top of other windows; show or hide the program when Windows starts, and more. We had some issues here, too. Some of the program's default settings are a little annoying, so for example if you drag and drop the program window then it'll just snap back to the centre of the screen. Just about everything can be reconfigured via the View menu, and the Hotkey and Options dialog, but it could still be annoying for beginners. Elsewhere, there's very little documentation. And if you expect your launchers to look stylish and glossy then, well, MadAppLauncher will leave you extremely disappointed. But, if you just want a simple way to organise large groups of applications, folders or files, then the program should serve you very well. Go check it out.

Facebook, Inc. has released Facebook for iOS 6.0, a major update for its iPhone and iPad app. The major new feature in version 6 is the introduction of “chat heads”, which allow users to chat from anywhere in the app – this feature isn’t yet universally available, but should be rolled out to all users “soon”, according to Facebook. Chat heads are small circular icons representing both individual chatters and Facebook Messages. The chat head appears automatically when receiving a message, or can be manually set up by tapping the contact’s name in the contacts list. The chat heads float on top of the main Facebook window: users can continue to use other parts of Facebook such as the news feed, then resume chatting by tapping the appropriate chat head icon. Icons can be dragged into new positions on-screen, while users can temporarily close the chat window by tapping away from it. The chat head icon can be removed simply by tapping and dragging the chat head down on to the close button at the bottom of the screen. Floating chat heads let you chat from anywhere within the Facebook app. The new feature is accompanied on the iPhone with the addition of support for inserting stickers – large smiley icons – into messages. Tap the smiley button to select one of 32 pre-included smiley faces, while more icons can be downloaded via the Sticker Store, which is accessible by tapping the blue basked icon. At the present time seven additional stickers are available – all free. iPhone users also gain support for customising their feed, with support for browsing new feeds like Music, Photos and Games. While iPad users don’t gain stickers with this build, they will find the main screen has been redesigned to bring photos and other pictorial elements front and centre. This mirrors developments made to the main Facebook.com news feed last month, a feature that Facebook claims populates the feed with “brighter, more beautiful stories”. Facebook for iOS 6.0 is available now as a free download for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

In the last few years Microsoft have spent a huge amount of effort tweaking the Windows taskbar, Start menu, Explorer, and just about every other aspect of the interface - except one. The desktop. This should be the place to organise icons in useful groups for easy access later, but Windows habit of rearranging them again in an order of its choosing means that's a total waste of time. Unless, that is, you install Fences. This simple free tool lets you quickly bring order to a chaotic desktop. Hold down the right mouse button, then drag around your work documents, for instance, and you can create a new "fence" to hold them. This is a shaded area of your desktop that works like a lightweight folder, so you can move the fence around, resize it, drag other icons in and out as you like. But you can create as many fences as you need, they're always displayed, and their position and icon ordering stays the same. So once you've created enough fences to organise your desktop then you can be sure Windows won't randomly rearrange everything later. Other options include the ability to tweak the look of your fences (transparency, colour and so on), and arrange them into predefined layouts, but our favourite feature has to be "Quick-hide". Just double-clicking an empty part of the desktop will make your icons disappear, or bring them back. And you can even choose a select few icons to always leave visible, so double-clicking will hide everything else and reveal only the shortcuts that matter. Fences really is a very smart idea, and well worth a look for anyone who's not making the best use of their Windows desktop.

As we move through June, there are more and more software titles being released. The past week has been pretty busy, particularly on the web browser front, but there have also been a number of other programs worthy of note. If you still use physical CDs and DVDs, ISO Workshop 3.0 is worth taking a look at as it enables you to work with virtual drives to save having to keep switching discs. Diskeeper 12 Home is a great tool for anyone looking to ensure that their hard drive is completely defragged, and Diskeeper 12 Pro includes support for drives exceeding 1TB. Another interesting tool for maintaining your system is GhostBuster 1.0.1.0, a free utility that remove references in the registry to hardware you no longer use. There’s also a portable version available - GhostBuster Portable 1.0.1.0. MP3 Toolkit Emsisoft Emergency Kit 2 is a free security tool that can be used to detect and remove all manner of malware, with the latest version greatly improving performance and reducing the number of false positives. Backing up your data is important for all manner of reasons, and Auslogics BitReplica provides you with a great way to do just this completely free of charge, while Password Encryption Analyzer Free enables you to quickly locate password-protected files on your computer. For more entertaining ventures, MP3 Toolkit includes everything that’s needed to rip, edit, tag and convert music files. Looking for a tool to play back your videos? Miro 5.0.1 can be used to view your locally stored media as well as streaming video from your favorite sites and feeds – this is in addition to music playback. Pale Moon The world of browser development has been incredibly busy, including plugins. For viewing online video and other content, Flash is still widely used, and Adobe Flash Player for Internet Explorer 11.3 and Adobe Flash Player for Other Browsers 11.3 are essential tools. Also from Adobe comes Adobe Air 3.3 which can be used to run cross platform applications with enhanced performance. If you like the idea of Firefox, but crave more speed and security, Pale Moon could be the browser for you. Pale Moon 12.2 and Pale Moon x64 12.2 both include improved privacy options as well as smooth scrolling enhancements  - two portable versions are also available in the form of Pale Moon 12.2 Portable and Pale Moon x64 12.2 Portable. If you prefer to work with an older version of Firefox, Pale Moon 3.6.32 and Pale Moon Portable 3.6.32 offer even more impressive performance. Waterfox And other Firefox-based browser is Waterfox, and Waterfox 13.0 is updated to include the features of the very latest version in a browser that is optimized for 64-bit systems. There have also been a number of updates to the main Firefox product. Mozilla Firefox ESR 10.0.5 is a version of the browser that offers excellent stability, albeit at the expense of features, and there is also a portable version available - Mozilla Firefox ESR Portable 10.0.5. Firefox 13 FINAL is the most recent stable release of Mozilla’s browser, which now includes smooth scrolling by default, a redesigned New Tab and Home pages, and various other enhancements. Firefox 14 Beta 6 boasts support for Windows 8’s Metro interface and new download manager, while Firefox Aurora 15.0a2 has now hit the Dev channel. Rounding off the releases from Mozilla, and this week’s roundup, are Firefox Nightly 16.0a1 (32-bit) and Firefox Nightly 16.0a1 (64-bit) which is great for anyone who wants to be on the absolute bleeding edge of browser technology. There’ll be another round up at the same time next week. In the meantime, don't forget to keep your eye on Downloadcrew for the latest releases as they happen.
